As the world’s energy needs diversify, all forms of energy will require storage. Power grids, in particular, will need better batteries to store renewable energy. University of Chicago electrochemist Chibueze Amanchukwu is working to create a more sustainable future. His lab uses AI and machine learning, along with experiments, to develop better batteries and systems to turn carbon dioxide into fuels. The goal is to create energy storage systems that are cheap, safe and can perform well over time. Our memories form our sense of self, and when they are disrupted—through conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder—our quality of life can be greatly affected. University of Chicago neurobiologist Mark Sheffield wants to understand how memories are created, stored and retrieved at the biological level. Using imaging techniques and a virtual reality environment, his research lab measures the activity of neurons and their connections within the brain. The goal is to understand these complex memory processes to better treat conditions that affect memory. Strokes and genetic conditions that cause brain bleeds are among the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. By the time University of Chicago neurosurgeon Issam Awad sees these patients, their brains have already suffered damage. This is why Awad has committed to understanding the causes and mechanisms behind this bleeding—to predict and prevent these bleeds before they occur. Over the last decade, researchers have begun to untangle the network of billions of bacteria, fungi, and microbes that live within our guts. It’s a monumental task that requires both new ways of thinking and specialized equipment. In his UChicago lab, Asst. Prof. Sam Light and his teammembers of his lab study these microbes by getting rid of the very gas that gives us life: oxygen. In a specialized chamber, they create an oxygen-free environment necessary to test microbes that live in our large intestines. Light and his team’s work has implications not only in understanding biology but in treating disease and enhancing health—from inflammatory bowel disease to Type II diabetes to liver disease. COVID-19 created a once-a-century public health crisis that, in turn, created a once-a-century public education crisis. A total of 50 million students nationwide lost the learning equivalent of a half a year of school. Prof. Jens Ludwig and the University of Chicago Education Lab have partnered with school districts around the country to design and test solutions to pandemic-era learning loss. Their research shows that intensive tutoring during the school day can double, even triple, what students learn in a year. Want a deeper dive? Neat rows of lab benches and gently humming freezers line the laboratory walls of Joyce Chen, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and Ben May Department for Cancer Research. Here, her team of scientists are finding innovative ways to grow lung cells and structures inside the laboratory. This helps us understand the many tiny changes that take place in your lungs when disease strikes—and thus find new ways to treat diseases and protect lung health. Want a deeper dive? In a sunlit greenhouse atop a biology building on the campus of the University of Chicago, members of Prof. Chuan He’s laboratory are working to modify plants so that they can yield substantially more food, even under the stress of drought. Years ago, He’s lab made a surprising discovery about the fundamental nature of genetics and RNA; today, they’re using this breakthrough to develop new ways to encourage plant growth that could help feed the world in the face of climate change.
