The family feud began back at Survivor Series 1993 where Owen was the only Hart eliminated in a traditional Survivor Series match, and this led to a reconciliation around the holiday period followed by another breakup at the 1994 Royal Rumble. At WrestleMania X, Owen defeated Bret in one of the best WrestleMania opening matches in history, but on the very same night, Bret won the WWF Championship after defeating Yokozuna. Seeing as he defeated Bret on the same pay per view, Owen felt bitter about Bret winning the championship, and so "The Rocket" went on a mission to earn a title shot against his older brother. Owen won the King of the Ring tournament in 1994 to prove he could do anything Bret could do. At the same show, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart showed up and he ended up backing up Owen. In storyline, Bret felt that Jim was "poisoning" his little brother and Jim was to blame for all the problems the Hart family were currently going through. Owen was then named number 1 contender for Bret's WWF championship, and a cage match was booked between Bret & Owen to ensure Jim Neidhart couldn't get in the ring.
