This pay per view marked the end of a succesful year for World Championship Wrestling that saw the company defeat the WWF in the "Monday Night War" Television ratings, and WCW wanted to end their year with a bang. Starrcade 96 would end up becoming one of the very best WCW Pay Per View shows of the whole Eric Bischoff era. nWo leader Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs Rowdy Roddy Piper headlined the show. The WCW Heavyweight Championship was NOT on the line for this match and this is something that has been critisied over the years. While it was never announced that the title wouldn't be on the line, it wasn't announced that it would be on the line either, and this leads to a very Hulk Hogan-esque PPV ending where he would celebrate in the ring after defeat.
