Kenyan vocalist Wambura Mitaru leads her student band in a riveting performance of her original "Work In Progress" on the roof of Berklee's soon-to-open 16-story tower at 160 Massachusetts Avenue. The 16 story building is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2014 with dorm rooms, practice and ensemble rooms, a fitness center, dining hall, and recording studios. The Saakumu Dance Troupe and the Berklee Ghana Drum and Dance Ensemble perform the traditional piece "Yaa Yaa Kole." The two groups met in Boston for an exclusive collaboration in support of MusicXChange Ghana. The music is performed with gestures to communicate the message of the gyil (xylophone) music to the audience and is meant to educate people about social control and other vices through music. MusicXChange, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Berklee student Federico Masetti'16 dedicated to preserving and documenting traditional music, and supporting music related activities in developing countries, including but not limited to music therapy, music production, and music education. The current work of the organization is focused in Ghana. MusicXChange is also a Berklee student club led by Ben Chappell, who is a current masters student. In light of the terrorist attacks in Africa (Garissa shootings, Boko Haram in Nigeria, shootings in Mali, and the on going killings in Burundi) and in the world, Njoki Karu wrote Omba to inspire people to stand together as one people and uniting to pray for the world. The song is called "Omba," which means pray, and it is in Kiswahili. The chorus is inclusive of some of the words from the Kenyan national anthem, and the bridge is in a variety of languages from all over the world. Lyrics below.
