He is a former WBC and Lineal Flyweight Champion. Considered to be one of the biggest punchers of his era, Avelar fought a who's who list of the very best Flyweights from an exceptional era packed full of talent. He first got a shot at the WBC world title in February 1979 against the great Miguel Canto but lost by unanimous decision. Avelar then racked up 6 wins in a row before taking the NABF title from Alberto Morales, defeating him by TKO in the 10th round. In his 2nd shot at the WBC title, he successfully defeated Shoji Oguma by 7th round KO and defended once against Kim Tae-Shik. In one of the final bouts of his career, Avelar knocked out future champion Wilfredo Vazquez in a fight regarded as one of the very best in boxing history. He retired with a professional record of 39-13-1 (32 KO's). My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at the time.
