The main storyline heading into the pay per view centered around Triple H losing the WWF Championship to Vince McMahon and The Game's efforts to win the belt back. Triple H won the championship the night after Summerslam 99. On an episode of Smackdown Helmsley challenged Vince McMahon to a match where his WWF Championship belt would be up for grabs. Mr. McMahon was able to compete in the match seeing as Triple "made it personal" by putting his hands on Linda McMahon (Vince was not allowed to get involved with WWF business due to a contract stipulation, however he was able to wrestle Hunter because it was a family matter). McMahon defeated Triple H, and the next night he vacated the Championship while declaring a new champion would be crowned at Unforgiven; the winner of the main event 6 Pack Challenge would leave Charlotte as the new WWF Champion.
