Starting the year off in the WWF, Flair decided to leave New York due to Vince McMahon wanting to begin pushing "The New Generation", a crop of younger superstars who would lead the company. Flair returned to WCW in early 1993 but due to a no-compete clause, he was unable to perform in the ring. "A Flair for the Gold", a talk show hosted by The Nature Boy, was put on WCW broadcasts as a way to keep Flair on television. In mid 1993, Flair returned to the ring where he mainly worked as a babyface. Big Van Vader dominated the WCW title picture not long after his WCW arrival. Feuds with Sting, The British Bulldog and Cactus Jack all saw Vader come out on top but Vader's Starrcade 93 opponent, Sid Vicious, was scheduled to win the WCW Championship and put an end to Vader's reign over World Championship Wrestling. When Sid got fired from WCW, the company decided to put Ric Flair in the title match. Flair put his career on the line at Starrcade 93 while Vader put the WCW Championship up for grabs, and the match turned out to be one of the most well received main events in WCW history.
