Yodsanklai’s fighting style differs very little whether he’s fighting full muay Thai rules or kickboxing-type rules. In this fight against Grigorian, he used his trademark left kick to great effect once more without taking any significant damage in the process. Grigorian’s counters were ineffective for a number of reasons; Firstly, the inside leg kick does not cut the mustard when countering a rear-roundhouse which lands on the rear arm or ribs; it does not score anywhere near as highly as the roundhouse kick and does not cause the recipient significant pain. Neither does it give the kicker any reason not to continue their barrage of kicks. Yodsanklai is rarely off-balanced by this counter attack and does not cause him noticeable pain. Therefore, it is deemed an ineffective counter-strike. Secondly, punch combinations CAN be used effectively to counter the roundhouse kick IF the punches land when the kick is still travelling. This way, it is more difficult for the kicker to block as he is throwing. It should also off-balance the kicker and cause him pain. However, Grigorian throws his punches AFTER the roundhouse kick has landed and so the punches are ineffective as Yod then has time to bring his hands up to cover the punches.
