'INCARNATE': Three Stars (Out of Five) The new supernatural horror flick directed by Brad Peyton; who previously helmed 'SAN ANDREAS' and 'JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND' (both starring The Rock). The film is about a modern day exorcist, who's not religious (and insists he's not an exorcist), that takes on a very powerful demon, from his past, that possesses an 11-year-old boy. The movie was written by Ronnie Christensen; and it stars Aaron Eckhart, Carice van Houten, Catalina Sandino Moreno and David Mazouz. It's received mostly negative reviews from critics, and it hasn't made much money at the Box Office (it only cost $5 million to make though). I found it to be slightly entertaining. Dr. Seth Ember (Eckhart) has the very special, and very unique, ability to enter the subconscious of people that are possessed. Because Ember doesn't really believe in God, or demons, he doesn't see it that way though. Still he combats the creatures. His latest assignment has him helping an 11-year-old boy (Mazouz), that's been taken over by an evil entity from Ember's past. The job proves to be the exorcist's most challenging assignment yet. The film has a pretty cool premise; it's kind of like 'THE EXORCIST' meets 'INCEPTION' (but it's not nearly as good as either of those movies though). Eckhart is great in the lead, but I think his talents are more than this film deserves. The movie is mildly frightening, slightly disturbing, and somewhat intriguing; but it never does enough with all of that potential. I think it's definitely worth a watch though, if you're a fan of the genre. Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: https://youtu.be/bryytrjyDdI
Too many reviews feel the need to offer a summary but I like to go on the assumption you know that by now. This movie was not as good as I thought it would be to be honest. I was excited by the trailer because it looked like an interesting new take on possession films but it was just not executed that great to me. Normally I see films these days and think it really didn't have to be 2 or 2 and a half hours long but Incarnate is the opposite. This movie craved more time. There's a reason why Constantine was 2 hours. The concept was also similar to The Cell as far as entering the subject's mind which can only have so much science in it as it's impossible. However unlike Constantine there's not enough supernatural background information to support the story. It was basically just I have a gift to go into possessed people's minds. Why can he only enter the minds of possessed? How long has he known he could? Are there others like him? What caused this gift? Inate? Or near death experience? Also this Maggie demon (which isn't typical as all angels including the fallen are historically male though I know why they call the demon this name it just sounds inaccurate) so obsessed with torturing him? No reason mentioned. So its not a bad movie at all but it starts out strong and ends weak like a mixed drink. It needed to be longer. It felt so rushed like it thought it was an episode of X-files and had to be done in 45 min. Pretty sure if it had been an X-files episode it would've been a 2 or 3 parter. Also great cast with the exception of the mother. She almost looked bored the whole movie as if her child wasn't possessed. She really needed to take notes from Ellen Burstyn. To sum up its similar to movies that were executed better. Constantine and The Cell to me. Others say Insidious but since I think those movies were crap I rather prefer Incarnate. Two thumbs up for trying to be different but honestly surprised this wasn't a straight to DVD.
I saw "Incarnate", starring Aaron Eckhart-Sully, Battle Los Angeles; Catalina Sandino Moreno-American Gothic_tv, Falling Skies_tv; Carice van Houten-Game of Thrones_tv, Valkyrie and David Mazouz-Gotham_tv, Touch_tv. This is a different type of exorcism movie. First of all, the hero of the story, Aaron, performs exorcisms but does not like to call them that. In fact, he doesn't like anyone else to call them exorcisms, either. He just says he is expelling a supernatural force from the body of a host. He does do it a little different than most Catholic priests usually work, too. He has a team that helps him go into the victims dreams and he does his fighting there. Catalina works for the Catholic church and has had some problems where conventional exorcisms just did not seem to work, so she goes to Aaron for help. David is a young boy that has been taken over by a demonic force that also seems to know Aaron. Carice is David's mother. There is another little twist to the usual fare; Aaron is in a wheelchair, due to an auto accident where his wife and son were killed. When he is in the person's dreams, however, he has full use of his legs. Like I said, it is a little different from what you may be used to. It's not a great movie but it is different. I guess their budget was not very big because they don't really show the demon. You only get to catch a glimpse of his hands and legs briefly near the end. It's rated "PG-13" for horror violence, terror, disturbing images and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 31 minutes. I don't think I would buy it on DVD but it would be alright, as a rental.
As far as Possession movies go there really isn't a whole lot left to do, and most films on the subject tend to not try anything new at all. That's where "Incarnate" stands out, the film does try to approach possession in a different and more science fiction way which on paper seemed like it could be really interesting, but unfortunately the execution was so basic that the whole thing ended up feeling really flat. The film opens fairly promising, the opening scene kind of has an eighties horror feel to it and that continues on through the opening credit which I really dug. But from there the movie starts to take on a very strange vibe, the overall tone is serious but some of the characters and lines just felt like they were bordering on parody. Some parts of the movie were just so dumb that it was impossible to take it seriously. The main character (played by Aaron Eckhart) speaks in a very gruff severe tone and honestly I found myself laughing at his delivery on some of the lines. Eckhart is a good actor but his performance here was a little comical. With all that said though the film does manage to be entertaining for the majority of it's run time. It's a very short film (clocking in just under an hour and twenty minutes) and the pacing is very quick so boredom was never really a big issue. So if you are interested in some cheap thrills and you are not easily put off by very dumb/cheesy movies than you may find yourself enjoying this. 5/10
My quick rating - 5,9/10. Very nicely told story of a man who can enter into the dreams of the possessed and basically "exorcise" them in a religious way. So he removes the demons from those that are tormented by making them understand in the dream state that the demon isn't real and forces them to let go f their grasp of the host. In this case a particularly nasty evil has taken hold of a young boy and he must again confront the same demonic spirit that killed his wife. My description so far has been pretty poor, I just reread it, but I try to stick with first train of thought. Really a quite good flick that doesn't rely on gore to tell he story. The jump scares are sprinkled in to keep the audience paying attention (and often very unexpected) along with even a twist thrown in just when you have it all figured out. Even with the movies flaws, this is a recommended viewing that will really make you think how much better this could've been if it just got a little more attention. As it stands, it is better than most of the cookie cutter "exorcist" movies that have been littering the STV shelves lately. Check it out.
