Initially 'Our Ladies' resembles a cheerful feel-good movie as they are regularly produced in England, Ireland and Scotland. What makes the film unrealistic is the excessive focus on sex. The film presents an endless series of clichés of sexually aggressive women and soft and stupid men. The writers must be male and have no idea about sexuality in general and female sexuality in particular. When a young girl (that is serious ill) finds the romance she has dreamt of, there is zero chance she will objectify him and turn her first date into a * hub fantasy. This movie is not about schoolgirls, its about men.
Not seen a female-led Scottish comedy drama this good since Wedding Belles. For me, the acting standout was Abigail Lawrie as Finnoula, but the whole cast was pitch perfect. The douchey male characters who crop up throughout are scarily accurate and really well portrayed. Great film with a lot of heart and one which takes a decent stab at making 2020's Edinburgh look like 1990's Edinburgh, especially given the obvious budget constraints. Regarding other reviewers' criticism of the lead characters' sex obsession: ok, I'll grant that it might feel a little OTT right at the beginning, and in the opening scenes you do kinda raise an eyebrow, but if you watch more than ten minutes of this and honestly come away thinking that's all this movie has to say for itself then you're not paying attention. Hopefully Michael67677 is just trolling with his "East coast accents in a film about Glesga" comment, but I might as well address it for non-Scots. Firstly, this is not a movie about Glasgow. Secondly, it's actually more obvious in this movie that you have some west-coasters putting on an east coast accent. In Our Ladies this is especially true of some minor characters which only crop up during the Edinburgh scenes, but it's hardly even worth mentioning as it doesn't detract from the story in the slightest. Given that most of Scotland's TV & film production facilities and talent are based in Glasgow, this "west coasters putting on a different accent" thing is very common, but you rarely hear people moaning about it and more to the point even when it's noticeable it's rarely what you'd call jarring.
Unfunny, unconvincing and unrealistic. Sure, I get it, teen girls talk about sex. But not 100% of the time and to the detriment of just about everything else as this movie would have you believe.... Gave up half way through.
One of those rare occasions of not expecting too much from a film and then being knocked sideways by the quality of the acting, story, script, music, singing etc etc Completely immersed from start to finish & disappointed when it ended. Including the end song. Well done to all concerned. Coarse on occasions but funny with it. The Northern soul club made me want to be there.
Being Scottish I always look forward to films set here and had been waiting to see this for quite some time. It was made in 2019 and only just seeing the light of day in 2021. It appears there is a reason for that. This is the story of a group of teenage Catholic schoolgirls set to attend a choir competition in Edinburgh in the mid 90s. The thing is these are just your average teenage Catholic schoolgirls....they are horny Catholic teenage schoolgirls, lesbian teenage Catholic schoolgirls and into BDSM Catholic teenage schoolgirls. You get the idea? Its not a joke that is the premise of the movie, written and directed by men. It seems to be trying to play the whole "sex positive" feminist angle but it doesn't really work. Nor does the being aggressive for no reason to men angle come across as "female empowerment", they just come across as annoying little girls. Its seems as if this is trying to cash in on the Derry Girls phenomenon and it really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath. DG is how it should be done, this is sub par Irvine Welsh territory and its odd how this isn't being described as what it actually is. Its basically male fantasies about Catholic schoolgirls. The story seems to be set in a parallel universe Edinburgh where almost every man encountered is a Begbie from Trainspotting knock off or a pathetic example who gets intimidated when a teenage girl says something sassy. Particularly odd is the fact one guy is wearing a Glasgow Rangers top underneath a suit jacket, in Edinburgh at a nightclub. I'm pretty sure the local Hibs and Hearts fans would have something to say about that. There is also the issue that character keeps going on about the Catholic schoolgirl stereotype as if to poke fun at it, when the film basically just reinforces all of these stereotypes. Talk about no self-awareness! The ending is the worst kind of emotional manipulation possible and doesn't sit well with the rest of the film. The three stars is for making a film in Scotland which puts the country on show, its just unfortunate that the story and characters were so unlikeable. While some films haven't seen the light of day due to Covid, other times its problems with the actual movie are to blame. A Teenage Catholic (inset sexualised stereotype here) Schoolgirls story being the main one.
East cost accents in a film about Glesga? Turned aff efter 5mins.

I can't say anything bad about this little Scottish film. The location, story, score ,acting ,cinematography all was superb ,can't recommend enough this gem. Well done to all involved ,10 out of 10.
I really enjoyed watching this film. Great cast and very good acting. The storyline was comedic and I would imagine the Catholic Church would be dismayed at the way in which their school pupils were portrayed! Some lovely views of Edinburgh and Fort William and all in all, a warming and funny romp. The only thing I'd recommend to other 'non-Scots' is to put your sub titles on!
This film was full of unlikeable characters with almost everyone apparently obsessed with sex. It was almost like some weird man had put his warped sexual fantasies about catholic teenage girls onto film and for that reason it was far fetched, very crude and lacking in humour. The scenery and soundtrack were the only two redeeming features. I would definitely NOT recommend going to see this.
