This movie was alright for it's genre. Had a few good suspenseful moments. A good story line - again - as far as this sort of movie. The thing is, a few better cast members would've really taken it up several notches. For example - Gary Busey would've made a great Jed! He could've brought so much more to the character. Also, the Don Johnson look-alike fed guy? Some one like Alec Baldwin would've brought a lot more interest & intensity to that character. I also think the sheriff guy could've had a lot more personality with a better actor. And of course - the kid - he played his part fine. But a more seasoned young actor could again, bring a whole lot more bc this was all pretty intense. I think the kid was meant to portray 'numbness' but it just didn't play. I liked the cheezy hutch character. He was pretty good at playing a cheezy schmuck. The brother, Danny was well played too. I knew no one in this movie except Neal - his character was pretty good - there was a lot of drama and actually a sort of dark humor in his situation with his mom & family deaths. Except the part where the movie starts - on THE day of his family funerals he discusses moving his mom to a cheaper part of the facility? That part took me out of the possible reality. It could'a been cut bc who would discuss THAT on that day? Plus he would have to bring death certificates, etc - it was just unrealistic. Just sticking with discussing getting his mom ready to go to the funerals would've been fine. Also - characters kept saying 'funeral' singular when it was 4 funerals he needed to go to. It irked me that no one ever pluralized it. Also - it irked me that it wasn't brought out to the sheriff or the boy that Emily was dead. Anyway - a better cast would've made a great thriller. As is, it's middle ground quality for entertainment - besides the fact that 'hit man' drama is low on my personal list of enjoyable genres, it wasn't an altogether wasted movie night.
I guess all those folks complaint about the slow pace of the movie are that kind of moronic audience that expect running car chases and gun fight all over the place, some slow budget version of Die Hard or The Dukes of Hazard, so they don't look and ask for what happens in the film. Is good to see an American film that escapes of that cinematic non-sense violencewich all the time presents on every film. The film is on the surface a film of criminal chasing a witness. I guess that explains that negative reaction of some morons. Well, thewy have to deal with that, and move on to the next chasing-cars-and-shooting-firearms piece of crap film. At the bottom, the film is about crisis and redemption. Crisis of the legal sistem and corrupt officials, familiar crisis of the several characters involved: Boon (Neil McDonough) has lost his mother and nevertheless he has to pursue a witness, Motley Adams (Dash Melrose), who not only saw how a mafia lord, Jay Haywood (Michael Cudlitz), kill his brother, Danny Adams (Dominic Scott Kay), but how local Sheriff Quincy (Jason Douglas) is coluded with Haywood, who also has to deal with his new born grandson, and so on. Yes, is not Road to Perdition, but is a good one flick, and the story has to be the way is told, slow and away from today mainstream violence films of American cinema. If you aren't a moron, you will enjoy this film by what it is, instead of waiting for spectacular car chases and all that ridiculous and unbelievable stuff Hollywood give to the audiences everytime.
OK, the good points: 1) great camera work 2) good music 3) some great actors the bad points: A) shockingly poor story B) totally unbelievable characters C) WAY too slow D) simply nothing to get invested in. How on earth did something this bad every raise the budget to get made?
They don't make good movies and they are jealous of the ones who do. Not good and obviously stacked with fake ratings just like the rest. Give it a pass and thank me later.
Danny (Dominic Scott Kay ) stole a ruby from Southern crime boss Jed Haywood (Michael Cudlitz ). Danny paid the ultimate price as his brother Motley (Dash Melrose) witnesses the murder in hiding. The boss hires Boon (Neal McDonough) to hunt down the teen which leaves him with a bad feeling. Not much of a southern crime drama. There are better ones out there, even the ones with Nicolas Cage. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
This film with a man "Danny" talking on the phone in the truck, and he hiding a red stone inside an urn scene! As turnout, this film is about a hitman "Boon" need to prevent a young boy "Motley" kill by a crime boss, and he eventually sacrifice by his act! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the smoking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the drinking scene, overuse of the hiding scene, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the running scene, and overuse of the talking on the phone scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the action scene have blood at certain point, but overall portray by sideways, and occur in too short of time! Make the film frustrated to watch! At the end, Boon died at the grave after saving Motley! That's it! Wasting time to watch!
This was probably one of the worst directed films I've seen in a long time. Novice writer and director Derek Presley also failed miserably in directing his cast, as everyone - except McDonough, seemed lost, bored, and didn't know how to act. He kept filming scenes that should've been ended, with the cast just standing around waiting for him to say "cut". Then you have a convoluted story with random unexplained scenes. What was the entire first 5-10 mins about? Drive up to a bridge, see a car, look around, a phone rings and you leave. Total amateur hour filmmaking. Never mind the ridiculous and easily avoidable plot and technical issues. Then you add the slow as molasses pacing, and the unnecessarily long - and what seemed unedited 97 min runtime, and you'll be pulling your hair out wanting it all to end. Presley should've at least had a seasoned writer fix his screenplay, because with such little substance and too much filler, this may have worked as a short or made-for-TV 1 hour film. Low budget B film or not, inexperienced filmmaker or not, there was no excuse to leave so many easily fixable flaws. I wouldn't even expect such a mess from a 5th grade drama class. The score started off loud and annoying, but either I got used to it, or it simmered down towards the end. This film did have some hope and promise to allow overlooking some flaws, but it just had too many of them, and knowing even a decent editor could've fixed most of them, is inexcusable. It's a very generous 3/10 from me, all going to McDonough who was the only one that did anything to hold up this mess while it was drowning.
Loved everything about this. Loved McDonough Was it slow paced? Yes. But that's what i like. It was remeniscent of old crime films that took their time to build. Really cool look. The kid who played the main character was good. Cudlitz rocked it as a baddie and i wish he did more films. The cast was solid and I personally loved the cinematography and the music. If I had one complaint it would be that I thought there would be more action but again, I didn't really care. The story was great and I was definitely on the edge of my seat. Not bad at all for an indie!
Neal McDonough and Michael Cudlitz are two of my favorite actors on T. V. I saw them and I watched it and I have to say - I loved this. It's not an action movie at all. More to it than that. It's got some action in it but it's a character film, and I was really surprised. The story was simple and to the point, which isn't bad at all. It's the characters. Really enjoyed it and I hope to see more from these guys.
