2 1/2 out of 4 stars. David Wain's "They Came Together" is a parody of all romantic comedies. It's a film that knows what it is and plays off of it. It's a simple story of boy meets girl, boy and girl fight, boy and girl separate, and boy and girl get back together. If you've ever seen a romantic comedy, you know what this story is and what will happen. Thanks to a talented cast, though, this film works for the most part. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler (who worked with Wain on "Wet Hot American Summer") have very good chemistry and the rest of the cast laughs along with them. I went into this film skeptical about it and walked away laughing more than I thought I would. It's a silly movie that feels like a cult film. The humor can be very forced at times, but, for the most part, the jokes work. If you're looking for a good short laugh, you won't be wasting your money. There's a bunch of cameos and witty humor that will keep you engaged. This isn't a film that's trying to be great, and if you accept that, you'll have a fun time.

I get it that this is supposed to be a satire of romantic comedies. Every interview he does David Wain says that about 45 times. I would have preferred to see any of those ROMCOMs besides this. I don't know how he did it but he found a way to make me dislike Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. That took real skill. And, the cinematography was dismal. It looked like they lit scenes with available overhead fluorescent lights. This is the worst film of 2014 so far. This seems like a SNL skit that lasted 110 minutes too long. I wish some of the other SNL players had more screen time. If I hear David Wain say ROMCOM one more time I am going to have an aneurysm.

This is the worst romantic comedy I ever saw. The main plot is a copy of "You got mail". The storyline is too predictable, OK so many will disagree because they said it is the idea of the writer to make fun of other movies. But the write lost it. When you watch it you will know that the humor is really really stupid. Example: Yes I love my candy store and want to make the business going and you know what kids, the candy are free!!! What is going on? It make you feel that the writer thinks the IQ of the viewers are below 0 !?!? The cast is good, too bad they signed up for this film which will add a black mark to their movie list. After the first 10 min, I already wanted to walk off but try to give another chance. But 8 min. further it is really too much to bare, I am sorry! I do not want to wast more of my time, I walked off. People, if you like really stupid jokes you will love this movie! Enjoy and God bless you.

Wow, this was bad. It's supposed to be a parody of romantic comedies but the humor is so annoyingly obvious and insistent that I actually became angry at the movie as I watched. Pretty sure making the viewer mad isn't what a comedy is supposed to do. It's one of those movies where everybody on screen is so smugly aware that they are making fun of something that it takes you out of the experience. It's less of a movie than a bunch of asshole friends getting together and being cynical jerks. Maybe it was a lot of fun for them but for me it was painful to sit through. I bet these douchebags did this for free. Aside from the lame attempts at parody, there is this scene with Paul Rudd and a bartender that will make you want to turn the movie off and walk away. Basically the joke is Rudd and the bartender go back & forth saying "You can say that again" and "Tell me about it," each taking the phrases literally and repeating themselves over and over. It's an old gag and it goes on FOREVER! It wasn't funny the first time but they beat that joke into the ground Tom Green-style until I was screaming at them to shut the hell up! It's terrible beyond words. The only time I laughed was at a poop joke. That's how bad this is -- the highlight was a poop joke. I think if this cast wasn't full of critics' darlings (Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Ed Helms, Bill Hader, Michael Ian Black, and many more), then it would be as reviled as Freddy Got Fingered. Please don't watch this movie. It's excrement.

I was really hoping for a good laugh, but this film was just awful. Don't waste any time or money here, there is nothing original or interesting here. At first, it seemed like a Sleepless in Seattle parody with two mentally ill people, but then it just went all over the place attempting desperately to be funny or quirky. It was like the cast of SNL and The Office got together to make a cheap movie. You will play the part of "the sucker" if you buy it. The writing is just horrible. Everyone has a comedic delivery as the cast from Anchorman, but without the funny parts. Everything is just dry and awkward, hollow characters telling stories that aren't interesting or funny. I know it sounds incredibly tempting, but go watch Ghostbusters or Airplane - at least those will make you laugh.

Can we give superhero status to Michael Showalter and David Wain? After all the destruction the "Scary Movie" films have done and all the harm that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer has done to the world of parody, these two come in when all seemed dark and to the point it could never return to the heights of hilarity that it had once seen back in the day and proved that parody can still work and work incredibly well! "They Came Together" is a ridiculously hilarious film that is filled with just some incredible talent. Everyone from Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in the leads to the minor appearances from Kenan Thompson, Christopher Meloni, Ken Marino, and Jack McBrayer to the more lengthy appearances of Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Jason Mantzoukas and more (even two great cameos at the end) are just—I hesitate to use the slang "killing it" but are just killing it on screen. Each and every player is bringing the script to life and making the film something that made my sides burst. From the moment it started until the time it ended (heck, even a day later as I'm writing this, I'm still laughing at the scenes that are playing on repeat in my brain), "They Came Together" had me rolling on the floor. The jokes are a mixed bunch that results in a film that I never found boring or repetitive. Sometimes the jokes are smart, always they are witty, occasionally they get super silly, and, on a few occasions, the film gets vulgar and offensive with its humor but, the point is, the film never stopped with its comedy and never rested on a formula that was the same thing over and over again. Michael Showalter and David Wain wrote a wickedly entertaining break down of the romantic comedy genre that proves that satire and parody is more than just some fart jokes, a guy hurting himself, and dated pop culture references that it was sadly becoming. I just loved this film and hated absolutely nothing about it. Greetings! My name is Rev. Ron and I love movies. If you feel like reading more of my rants, ramblings, geek references, bad jokes, and other movies reviews (like a more in-depth, totally gushing look at "They Came Together" and other films that would be improved if Showalter and Wain wrote the script), you can visit my blog at revronmovies.blogspot.com. If you don't feel like any of those things I said and probably hate me (because we love to hate things on the internet), you can go about your day because these aren't the droids you're looking for.
