Bon film !
I had not heard of this film before deciding to watch it, so I was not aware of its poor reputation. And lucky for me, because I found that the critics, and many of the idiot 'reviewers' here (cough cough), are dead wrong. Surprise, surprise. Plot In a Nutshell: Staff at a suicide-prevention center (Steve Martin et al) and their friends become immersed in increasingly comical situations on Christmas Eve. Why I rated it an '8': because this is one funny film. It starts off OK, then like a slow burn, it warms up more and more and by the end, I was sold. It's a pure comedy, little sentimentality, so don't expect another "When Harry Met Sally..." or "Sleepless in Seattle" (Nora Ehpron's more popular earlier works). But the humor from those films is here, and it's ratcheted up a few notches. Watching the craziness unfold was a delight. This film did poorly with the critics for reasons I don't understand. Roger Ebert gave it only 1.5 out of 4 stars, complaining "maybe there's too much talent." In truth there are really only six main characters, not hard to follow, so I don't know what he was talking about. The idiot 'reviewers' on this website (and I use that term loosely) provide worthless commentary I found to be devoid of any value. For example, someone wrote: "this remake is a disgrace." Apparently Mixed Nuts is a remake of a French film. I never saw that film and I never will. So I don't care that it's a remake, that means nothing to me. And that comment tells me nothing about this film. Idiot. Someone else wrote "The largest waste of talent ever put to film." Oh yeah? Can you prove that? Or is this just a ridiculous exaggeration which you misguidedly think makes you sound smart? Well, it doesn't. You just sound like an uneducated jackass given to hyperbole. Someone else wrote "Please don't watch." Here's a question...why do you care what I watch? I couldn't care less what you watch...but it's probably repeats of "The Masked Singer." Moron. And this: "I did not laugh a SINGLE time!" Really? Really? Not once, huh? Then guess what? You must have the sense of humor of a dead fish. There are numerous funny bits in this film. Steven Wright's cameo. The obscene phone caller with leukemia. Garry Shandling's body wrapped in a Christmas tree. The Steve Martin and Liev Schreiber dancing scene. The fruitcake from hell. The film is packed with hilarious moments if you just go with it. Way way better than these simpletons writing reviews would have you believe. 8/10. Good Christmas comedy that gets better as it plays out. So glad I ignored the haters. Will definitely watch again.
I know I saw this movie several years ago and remembered it well, but I didn't remember enjoying it so well as I did tonight watching it with friends while fringing a muffler for a Christmas gift. All the actors were outstanding and the plot free-floating and quirky, but my favorite character was the transvestite as played by Liev Schreiber. He was fantastically graceful and engaging! It was like watching old home movies with so many talented actors playing with each other -- almost like a whole film of improv. For people who did not find it funny at all, I would be curious what they do find funny. It must be the years of working in cancer research that has made my sense of humor somewhat dark and quirky yet essentially optimistic. I intend to buy my own copy of this movie to watch regularly along with Groundhog Day, one of my other favorites.
This is an incredibly abysmal film. From the cast & the creators it had heaps of promise, but it failed to deliver on every level. Filled with unfunny characters, unbelievable scenarios and flat acting, this is one film to avoid. It felt like it went for about 3 hours, the characters seemed underdeveloped & even Liev Schreiber in drag & Adam Sandler in one of his earliest films cannot save this from the scrap pile of bad films. One to avoid.
Well I don't even like nuts, especially mixed ones, but I did love this movie. It reminded me of a really good play, kind of like how Noises Off was. Every actor was in their element and played their parts well. Madeline Kahn (sorry if the spelling is incorrect) was hilarious as Mrs. Munchnik, waiting for her dead husband's sister to call for Christmas holidays. The elevator scene with her character and the toy drum machine has had me laughing since '94. I also still have Adam Sandler's song , "Oh so many things to wonder..." in my head. I liked all the characters, well except maybe Felix. This film is underrated as it doesn't really fit into the norm, def not a Christmas themed movie and not quite a formula comedy. "Click it, go ahead...just click it." I recommend giving it a watch at any time of the year.
This is a comedy and as a comedy it has THE problem from which all comedies suffer: namely they don't appeal to everyone. Humour is a very personal matter. That said I have to come clean and say that in my opinion this is a funny film that grows on you with repeated viewings. I first saw it shortly after it came out about ten years ago, and thought it sweet, and a little black in parts, but little more. However just recently I purchased this film and watched it again, then again. It's great!!! All the characters are totally loony including those manning the suicide help line (Madeline Kahn, Steve Martin and Rita Wilson). But the whole cast is wonderful from Adam Sandler and his useless songs and lousy ukulele playing to Juliette Lewis "safely" emptying a gun by firing it!!!to Rob Reiner the Vet complaining that all women are obsessed with frilly pillows, to Steve Martin insisting that there is hope in every pothole, to Madeline Kahn as the uptight Blanche Munchnik rattling on about her dead husband's sister who she must visit for Christmas, to Liev Schreiber the transvestite with the Louise Brooks hairstyle, to last and by no means least Anthony LaPaglia playing the slapstick role of a suicidal Santa Claus who wants a wall to paint a mural on, gets hit over the head with a fruit cake, falls down steps, crashes into Christmas trees, overdoses on animal tranquillisers, seems to spend most of the film in hot pursuit of the heavily pregnant Gracie (Juliette Lewis)and gets mistaken for a cat. (His name is Felix after all!!!) Now, after all that, if you don't want to catch this film then that's your funeral (or should that read fun-for-all!!!???!) This film is worth watching. It's great Christmas fare that leaves you feeling all happy and smiley.
Mixed Nuts is without a doubt the WORST comedy I've ever had the misfortune to see. It's an absolute train wreck !!! I watched this movie with four other people, and no one laughed -- not even once !! We watched the whole thing out of sheer fascination that so many talented people could be involved in such a witless piece of pap! Didn't anyone read the script before they signed on ?!!? Were they all blinded by the fact that other big names would be associated with it ? Preserve your time and money!! There's nothing whatsoever that's worthwhile about this movie!!! Don't say you weren't warned...
Worst movie I have ever seen. So bad I just stared at the screen jaw-hanging open that it could be so disorganized, unfunny, overbearing, hack-acted, and pointless. I only kept watching because I believed at every 15 minute mark that it couldn't possibly get any worse. And yet it did every single time. I'm stunned the people behind this colossal crap-fest were allowed to ever work in the business again. Yes, it truly is that bad. If you enjoyed this movie, you combine horrible taste with an extremely low IQ.
One of those "slice of life" stories, "Mixed Nuts" portrays several hours on Christmas Eve in a crisis hot-line center where Phil (Steve Martin) works. Over the day, a most unusual series of events happens, and no one's life will ever be the same again. Some of the scenes are real shockers (you'll know them when you see them). Steve Martin has a great time with the role, as does Rita Wilson as Catherine O'Shaughnessy, Phil's co-worker. You'll really like the elevator scene. Great support from Madeline Kahn, Robert Klein, Juliette Lewis, Anthony LaPaglia, Rob Reiner, Adam Sandler, and Liev Schreiber make this movie truly one Christmas treat. Jon Stewart and Parker Posey also appear.
It's the Christmas season in LA. Philip (Steve Martin) runs a crisis hotline LifeSavers with Catherine (Rita Wilson) and Mrs Munchnik (Madeline Kahn). Stanley Tennenbaum (Garry Shandling) is evicting them for being 3 months behind on the rent. There is a serial killer on the loose called the Seaside Strangler. Felix (Anthony LaPaglia) is the loser father of pregnant Gracie (Juliette Lewis)'s unborn baby. Susan (Joely Fisher) breaks up with Philip. Chris (Liev Schreiber) is a transvestite. Louie (Adam Sandler) lives in the building. Mr. Lobel (Robert Klein) hates Munchnik. Dr. Kinsky (Rob Reiner) is an animal vet. Parker Posey and Jon Stewart are a couple of rollerbladers who keeps trying to bring a Christmas tree home. Who knew either were rollerbladers. I don't understand what the Ephron sisters think is funny in this movie. It's a chaotic mess. It's a great cast of terrific comedic actors doing slightly weird and quirky things without actually being funny. There are some sad attempts at slapsticks. Everybody in the movie is trying so hard to be quirky that they stumble over each other. The central premise of the suicide hotline is like a dare from a comedian to laugh. This movie mostly left me scratching my head at all the slightly annoying people.
