Mehdi Hassan's playback singing career brought him many accolades. Mehdi Hassan was born in a small village called Luna in Rajasthan. He hailed from a traditional Musical family. It is said that his family belonged to the Kalawat clan of musicians and Mehdi was the 16th generation. Mehdi Hassan's tutelage took place under his father Ustad Azim Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were both Dhrupad singers. Post independence Hassan and his family moved to Pakistan, where they went through terrible financial crisis. Mehdi Hassan did many odd jobs during this tenure but he was never out of touch with the love of his life, music. In 1957 Mehdi got the opportunity to sing in Radio Pakistan as a Thumri singer. This was the beginning of his singing career. Mehdi was greatly passionate about Urdu poetry and that is how he started dabbling with Ghazals. Then he got his first playback break in 1962 for the film Susral and there was no looking back for Mehdi Hassan. His name became synonymous with the art form. This album contains some of the Mehdi Hassan Classics. Some of them are immortal songs which are being listened by Ghazal lovers for generation after generation.
