Love According to Dalva

Dalva is a twelve-year-old girl who dresses like a woman to please her abusive father. This is the starting point of the film, which immediately draws us into the story. The film begins with her father's arrest. The viewer doesn't immediately understand. Dalva doesn't understand. For the rest of the film, we follow Dalva's evolution in this situation and her perception of things. The film evokes her relationship with children her own age in the institution where she is placed, her relationship with her mother, her relationship with her father, her relationship with her educator (Alexis Manenti). Her relationships are often based on seduction. Emmanuelle Nicot has chosen a difficult subject, which is dealt with justly, i.e. Without unnecessary pathos, without judgment for the little girl, in small touches. And it's true that Zelda Samson, in the role of the little girl, is a real eye-catcher. A film with a strong subject and a strong form.

Zelda Samson is Dalva, a twelve-year-old girl who is removed from her home and sexually abusive father. She is placed in a home for troubled kids. One of the other girls is there because her mother is a prostitute who services clients in a room next to her daughter's. This is not a Disney movie. Samson is present in virtually every frame of this film and she is absolutely riveting in the lead role. Everyone else is pretty much just window dressing. The social workers have a hell of as time convincing Dalva that she has been brainwashed by her father into confusing a sexual relationship with love. Dalva is easliy one of the best films of 2022.

A great approach to abuse.it is amazing to see the twisting of a childs character,feeling that she is a grown up woman. She has lost every part of childhood and she is suffering not able to feet with children in her age..also not actually believing that she was abused. The acting of Dalva was amazing!! The character was building up..until...it wasn't anymore...the end was disappointing. I didn't see the actual changing of the character and how it happened. I didn't see the effort, the pain of transformation and the happiness maybe..finding again childhood. I dint see the change of thinking and feeling against the father...whar happened? We didn't see any of that.. is she really feeling better? Does she understand what happened? How does she feel now? ...it's like the film was cut in half.. But above all it is a film worth seeing and we'll done.

I've been following movies seriously for about 40 years and even longer casually - there are only three or four other cases I can remember of directors whose very first film was so free of mistakes - borderline masterpiece. In fact I can think of a fare amount of well known directors whose first movie was riddled with problems. Emmanuelle Nicot movie Dalva - joins this very short list of directors that started their career with a blast. It's a compact story told without a millimeter of excess using a very lean approach to cinema directing but doing it like a veteran of the trade. Most of these rare movie directors that started with a bang had one more thing to help them through - a rare acting performance and Emmanuelle Nicot got Zelda Samson whose list of credits has nothing but this film and still she carries the entire film on her shoulders with precision and force rarely found among her peers. And it's not an easy role to play, on the contrary. It didn't go without recognition as Zelda won the rising star award of Louis Roederer Foundation and Emmanuelle Nicot won the Fipresci award in the last Cannes festival, in the parallel sections. I'm not sure what the parallel sections stand for but I believe we all know what's a rising star, and Zelda Samson has a star written all over her future if she keeps on this way. It's not an easy film to watch, but as far as difficult film matter goes this movie is it. Go see it if you get the chance.

Very good performances, pacing and direction. An important side of abuse that needs more highlighting, I congratulate and thank everyone involved for committing to making this work. For me, the ending was a disappointment. I didn't buy Dalva's sudden acceptance of her Mother against her Father. I didn't see this transition or a real development of Dalva's character in the final third of the film. For me, the narrative needed more expansion. The role of the Mother was one dimensional Dalva was so well drawn as a character that I found it hard to believe that she would willing move in with her Mother and his new family. Does she believe her father abused her?

The subject matter of the film is surely the most horrendous type of abuse, yet it's filmed in such a way that there is no excess, no unnecessary musical cues to break our hearts, sentimentality, or overly dramatised scenes. It's a film stripped bare of non-essentials, which gives it a kind of peaceful quality. The film is almost entirely carried by Zelda Samson, as Dalva, and she does it to perfection. Again, nothing to excess -no over-acting- the subject is dramatic enough on its own. I found it disturbing, upsetting, but totally hypnotic, watching this young child discover what it's like to be a child, to have friends, and learn that what happened TO her wasn't her fault. Emmanuelle Nicot has certainly made an impact with her first film. I hope she continues in this way, and she'll surely have a wonderful career ahead. The same goes for her young star, Zelda Samson. Congratulations to all involved!
