Well, the title of this 2022 movie didn't exactly scream top notch movie, but I still opted to sit down and give "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl" a chance, on the account of it being a movie that I had never seen nor heard about. Writer Kent Roudebush actually put together a fair enough script and storyline here, because "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl" was every bit as campy as I had expected. The movie did, however, have a lot of pointless nudity, which didn't really help further the movie in any way. And had director Jim Wynorski opted to not go for all that nudity, then "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl" would actually have been a far more enjoyable sci-fi comedy. Of the entire cast ensemble in the movie, I was only familiar with actress Christine Nguyen. I will say, though, that they had an interesting cast ensemble together for the movie, where some performers put on good performances on the screen, and other put on somewhat dubious performances. Visually then I was actually surprised with "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl". The effects were rather good for a movie such as this. All in all, then director Jim Wynorski's 2022 movie was watchable enough for what it turned out to be. Sure, you're not in for a grand cinematic moment in cinema history, but then again, with a title such as "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl", what did you expect? My rating of "Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl" lands on a four out of ten stars.
This is yet another low budget B movie from acclaimed director Jim Wynorski. The synopsis essentially summarizes everything. Lead character (Ivy Smith) eats a scientific food/ experiment, not fully tested (a hotdog), first has small symptoms, then few days wakes up and becomes a giant (50 ft tall). It was apparently Ivy Smith's debut and we could tell, the acting wasn't great and the tone in her voice was never truly convincing. Christine Nguyen, a season veteran was better as expected but still we don't watch these films expecting great acting. The film isn't really funny but isn't overly forced in its comedy. Nothing really stands out. It's silly for the sake of it. The group of three scientists are also some of the highlights. People may be watching for skin but there isn't too much (few seconds of Ivy Smith removing her bikini and a brief * scene). However having watched on Tubi (free streaming service) and apparently they cut out almost entirely the opening shower scene (about 2:45 in) of Ivy Smith showing full frontal of her chest, along with completely cutting out Christine Nguyen's full frontal shower scene later in the film (around 13:45 mins). Both women do support a bikini a lot of the film. The good thing is the very short runtime (only 1 hour). Otherwise this is a skip.
This is the exact same story as The 60 Foot Centerfold, but this time you CAN sit through the whole script, because all of it is part of the thing going on. Is it a good film? No. But it manages to be more than softcore, or product-placement. My question though: who is our hero? Everyone is ... let's say it that way: unsympathetic. Even the three scientist side-persona. Every single one of them.
The acting was as believable as the lead actresses... assets. Her voice is shrill and not pleasant. The female antagonist was more believable, but the overall movie was not worth wasting an hour of my life.
Attack of the 50 Foot Camgirl is very self-aware - and that's the beauty of it. It pulls-off it's intent VERY masterfully - a funny, campy, clever, sexy, witty, smart romp with a talented cast that's sure to spawn a franchise and have lasting appeal as a cult fave, inline with Full Moon's classic catalog. Think of the golden era of the "Cinemax After Dark" days, where you'd find a late-night movie on TV that you'd already seen 12x but kept coming back to. Same effect. It's just good entertainment, and great for parties. This is the kind of thing you can expect to watch repeatedly because it's so infectiously corny, chock-full of quotable lines, and some legitimately impressive special effects, both practical and CGI-based, and really good work with miniatures. It's a proper b-movie - a throwback with contemporary sensibility. Lead actress Ivy Smith is an absolute delight in her film debut, artfully nailing her comedic timing and delivery, especially after the turn in the third act. Her dialogue is cleverly scripted and her running gags are well-placed. Her exchanges with co-stars Christine Nguyen and Lisa London are truly funny. Smith is a star on the rise, and she adequately AND graciously shares the stage. The story's barrage of well-placed and well-delivered jokes is constant, and that's a good thing - with tons of delicious double-entendre - with a massive dose of Influencer Economy jargon, attitude, and sensibility. Smith wil have you initially despising Beverly Wood, turning your eye-rolling into laughter, and ultimately rooting for the character. That's a solid story. That's art. And great entertainment.
I like some of Jim Wynorski's work, I really do. Chopping Mall and a few others are B movie classics. I used to love Full Moon back in the day. They used to produce some really cool films and Charles Band will always be a b movie legend. However, days of their glory are gone for good and whatever Full Moon releases these days(well since late 90's, really) is amateurish garbage. 'Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl' is just that - pure, cheap garbage. Sure, there are people who watch these softocore comedies only for T&A but let's face it, you can as well watch *. Leading 'actress' Ivy Smith looks and sounds just like a low budget * performer. Some might find her pretty but she can't act and even though it's her first role, It's quite obvious she won't get much better. There will always be a place for fairly attractive women ready to show their skin and work for next to nothing on zero budget films but it's a blind alley. They will never be pros. Overall acting is a bad joke here. Even someone like Lisa London(who was in quite a few actual films) overacts badly. Jokes aren't funny to say the least and everything here screams 'home movie quality'. Best thing about the film is it's short running time and the miniatures. If you appreciate your time and you like decent b movies, you should skip this one. If all you need is bare skin(not much of it here, though), you will probably watch it and say it was awesome. If you support everything Wynorski and/or Band do, you will watch it anyway. And that's ok. Personally, I believe Wynorski deserves better than this.
It seriously pains me to say this, having been a longtime fan of Charles Band's going back to his Empire Days, the state of play at the House Of Full Moon is but a shadow of former glories! There's a germ of a good idea in here, but what was needed was decent acting and most importantly a script worthy of the title itself. Had the Director made this in the 80's the whole production would've made for better viewing but as it stands, despite some cameos from himself plus Becky LeBeau, this is woeful stuff. Of course the sequel is forthcoming but I won't be checking it out.
