There are few words that can describe the beauty of Blue Bayou. With incredible cinematography, writing, and acting it is hard to keep your eyes off of this film. Blue Bayou is absolutely devastating from beginning to end with a gripping plot that will keep you asking for more. This is one of the few films I've ever watched where I had zero complaints. Justin Chon has created a masterpiece that shall never be forgotten.
2 out of 5 stars. Blue Bayou is a boring drama film that is based on real events with adoptees getting deported back to there countries. The story is gripping. The acting from the two leads is okay. The direction is kind of boring and dull.
Antonio is a young dad and a recently cleaned up criminal - but life comes barreling down on him as he faces deportation as an incorrectly adopted Korean kid. Vikander brings the seasoned depth to this drama that makes the film worth it.
This movie is a work of writer-director Justin Chon, American-born of Korean parents. As the end credits show there are thousands of adoptees here from foreign birth that have grown up here yet are subject to possible deportation. It is a feature of the USA immigration laws. His goal was to raise the awareness. This fictional story is set and filmed in the New Orleans area, much of it on the West bank area known as Algiers. Chon plays a character that was born in Korea and when he was three adopted by a American parents. Yet in spite of growing up her and now being husband and father gets into a scuffle with a dishonest cop and becomes threatened with deportation. Vikander plays his wife. The story gets a bit complicated but overall is well made and interesting. Viewed at home on DVD from my public library.
This film advocates for "foreigners" adopted by Americans at a young age, never got their legal status as adults, and face deportation. The subject here is Antonio, of Korean descent who grew up in Louisiana, but came to the attention of ICE, who puts him on the list for deportation. He faces separation from this (white, American citizen) wife, step-daughter, and new-born daughter. But he has two felonies on record (which also makes it difficult for him to find work), and his way of making money fast is by criminal activity. So it did not generated much sympathy from me. For stories of migrants to the U. S., I prefer Icebox and I Carry You With Me.
I was disappointed in the way that the movie ended. But then reading the credits I understand why the movie ended the way that it did. It was very sad to read the credits of the movie to find out there are many more people from foreign countries adopted as babies and living their whole life in a country they've only known to be deported once they became an adult after an issue. Shameful they were not protected by the country they've only known!!
An impressive experience written, directed and starred by Justin Chong a rare thing is done very well! Such a great story about Antonio really caring for his family with the chance of being deported. Great how the drama reminds of Walt in Breaking Bad cause Antonio tries to do bold things to not get deported even if that means hangout with the wrong crowd. Blue Bayou should be more of a hit it's so well filmed and has phenomenal acting!
What an absolute gut punch of a movie. There's no hollywoodization of some of the realistic and frankly archaic and barbaric practices experienced by the character, based on a real person and story. It's raw and inescapable, nuanced and a well rendered mediation on exactly the kind of thing Americas' ICE and the legislation behind it, do every day to people they decide don't belong, when they've been there their whole lives. Sure can tell which reviewers are from America, eating the propaganda no problem. This deserves to be at an 8, for sure.
An adopted man born in Korea who is married to a woman with a child from another guy is now in unjust hot water and at risk of being deported. He also has an old felony for motorcycle theft which isn't helping his ordeal. As the screws tighten on his deportation, other hidden factors are revealed from his past and serious stresses and emotions are set into motion. This was a raw and gritty story that felt genuine with outstanding acting. The handheld feel with a grainier film stock complimented the story. This story raises awareness to many kids who were legally adopted and deported decades later from inadequate paperwork.
Don't get me wrong, this is a powerful story shedding a light on the awful fate that some families live through. However, the story didn't need the second cop whatsoever. Without that character, I'd rate this a 7-8. His character was unnecessary and quite unbelievable, especially the pivotal scene with him near the end. At that point, I stopped caring for the movie due to how ridiculous it was. Outside of that, we enjoyed it.
