Best of 2024 so far
Well, I had no idea what to expect on this movie. I thought maybe it was a horror film and I had not seen the previews or at least that made me remember anything about it. So I went in kind of blind, not having any expectations on this movie. But I found myself laughing in some of this movie and it kept me entertained and that's what a movie is for so I do believe it deserves at least a rating of five or higher. You won't be bored in it and for any of the younger folks, they were really find the movie, enjoyable, and funny. It's one of those movies that teens can see and it's just not a horrible or provocative show. So I felt like it was a movie that was fine for teenagers.
For a low budget film, I thought this was a very good effort that keeps in the spirit of Shelley's classic. The location of the old house was great and I think the best coup of the film. Great use of sets and decent acting. It was fun to see Michelle Ryan (Zoe from Eastenders) in a role again though wish she was in it more. Small complaints were that I think some of the character scenes went on for too long and not enough of the monster. Also the location of the old house made other locations really stand out as sets (cut from a beautiful stately home to cheap looking special effects of an asylum) Otherwise, great watch for a lazy afternoon.
Bon film !
Frankenstein: Legacy is one of those films that will pleasantly surprise you. There hasn't been much hype surrounding it but there should be. The story alone is quite intriguing. Taking place shortly after Shelly's literary masterpiece, Dr. Frankenstein's Arctic chase of his creature has ended in tragedy. The journal which contains all of his research has been stolen and sold to the highest bidder. By hook, by crook and murder the journal changes hands again and again in a cool little sequence until it lands in those of scientist Millicent (the brilliant Juliet Aubrey). Her hubby Robert (Waterloo Road's Philip Martin Brown) is dying and Millicent sees Frankenstein's research as a way of saving, preserving his life. Even under the constraints of the film's budget and with no lines to speak of, Philip Martin Brown does a magnificent job as the Creature. The Creature itself is a blend of what you have seen in previous films and in stage adaptions which stick closer to Shelly's creature as opposed to the characterizations we've seen on the big screen. BTW: If you can ever check out the 2011 Royal National Theatre adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in which Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller swapped playing the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creature, please do so. You will be glad that you did. Their rendition is one of the very best. Cumberbatch and Miller also played Sherlock Holmes in two distinctly different versions of the character for television in BBC's Sherlock and Elementary on CBS. Legacy's Creature could have used a bit more movie magic to make him look far more imposing especially compared to some of the other characters he is supposed to be lording over but Brown deftly jumps between being a threatening beast and a sympathetic being who never asked to be reborn, he himself is a victim of sorts. The ending is more than a little bit harried and seems rushed in places but Frankenstein: Legacy is certainly a worthy chapter in the Frankenstein film library.
The mention of Frankenstein has always attracted allot of attention and expectations, the story line goes back ages, with fans from all age groups.. that last one Frankenstein angels and demons was a blockbuster fans couldnt get enough of it, that was real acting, money well spent. This Frankenstein legacy of 2024 on the other hand is the opposite, low budget, terrible characters, the doctors mom was nothing to write home about, the doctor though showed potential. In my opinion the worse action in this movie was the lady that was on a journey to find and destroy the journal, she was TERRIBLE, trigger happy, the role was usless, I wouldn't let her act a village movie.
Needless to say that the 2024 movie "Frankenstein: Legacy" was a movie that had snuck in under the radar undetected. And I happened to come across it by random chance, and thus opted to sit down and watch it. I have to admit, blatantly though, that I harbored zero expectations to writers Paul Dudbridge and Jim Griffin, because the classic Mary Shelley story have been interpreted a tad too many times on the screen, and mostly with subpar result. The storyline in the movie was dull one, to say the least. There wasn't a whole lot of anything interesting happening, and it was more of a period-set drama than a thriller. And that was quite a disappointment. I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And that is, believe it or not, actually something that appeals to me when I watch a movie; as there is no association to previously portrayed characters in other movies. The acting performances in "Frankenstein: Legacy" were actually fair enough, despite the fact that the actors and actresses had next to nothing to work with. The CGI in the movie was pretty atrocious for a movie made in 2024; it looked like something from the early 2000s. So having lousy CGI effects definitely didn't help to lift up the movie. And a movie such as what director Paul Dudbridge was trying to deliver here with "Frankenstein: Legacy" needs proper and convincing special effects. And the movie just simply didn't have that, and the end result was a subpar movie. Ultimately a swing and a miss of a movie, and not one I would recommend for horror fans to rush out and get to watch. In fact, I might actually say that you shouldn't waste your time, money and effort on this movie, especially if you are a fan of the original work of Mary Shelley. Some of us suffered through the 101 minutes, so you don't have to; you're welcome. My rating of "Frankenstein: Legacy" lands on a three out of ten stars.
From the start it's clear this is a VERY cheaply made movie. They get an old house, dress some people up in period costumes and get out the digital camera. It sure isn't Universal's Frankenstein. Heck, it's not even Hammer's Frankenstein. The writing is really bad and the directing is amateurish. Perhaps because of a low budget that require a lot of close up so you don't see the surroundings. It tries to be a serious effort but its all bogged down by a complete lack of talent for all involved. Not sure why they bothered to make this movie. The concept might be OK but it really requires a bigger budget and better writing and acting to make it work!.
