Okay, let's get this out of the way first: This is not a good movie. Not even close. There's no real depth to it, you feel like you're watching a movie instead of watching real life, and the acting is not good. But wait... It's actually a bit entertaining. This is like Premium Rush was to fixie riders, but with less budget and the acting not nearly as good. It's tough to watch for large portions of it. The acting is actually pretty close to what skaters act like, I don't get the sense that it's bad acting in that sense, but only in the sense of it feeling like you're watching a bunch of skaters just hanging out. In that way, it's very real. The shop owner Dave is actually portrayed well, and he seems authentic. One thing this movie showed well was the reality of a small business owner's struggle to stay above water. There are tons of shops like this, and the exchange between Dave and the customer saying they saw the same deck but for $15 cheaper and with free grip online, is something we've all seen or done ourselves at some point, but in the way it's portrayed here, you feel Dave's pain and how difficult it is for local businesses to make money. Honestly, it made me want to never ask a local business if they can match a price again. Skateshop definitely echos the ethos nice guys finish last, and that passion projects of our youth don't always pay the bills but that it's still important to value this dying breed of business. There is tons of skating, I'd say half the film is a skate montage, but the movie does bring a lot of positive imagery and messages with it. It's definitely a 'home sick and want to watch something where I don't have to think much' type of flick, but it's fun no matter what. Skateboarding is not a crime :)
I watched this movie with my friends and there are a few things I would like to comment on. I loved the story line and the skaters trying to earn money for their skate shop touched my heart. And when Jake won the competition, and was able to save the skateshop, it was so beautiful and touching. However, there are two problems that I had with this movie. First off, the skaters are supposed to be teenagers, however, most of them look to be in their thirties. This wasn't the big issue. The main thing that really upset me was the lack of attention and focus on Officer Goe, played by Shawn Hawthorne. His role didn't get enough hype and I believe his important role in this story was ignored. All the attention was on the skaters and the skateshop, but what about the real star? Shawn is definitely the best actor out of everyone in this movie. The way he threw Jake onto the cop car showed real emotion, which I believe the movie lacked without Shawn Hawthorne. Shawn is 100% underrated and I believe he should've appeared on screen much more, possibly in every single scene. In fact, I believe the movie should've been about his side of the story and how courageous he was as the sheriff. Shawn is a future star and I am so disappointed and dissatisfied that the film couldn't portray that.
If you skate, chances are you will have a fun ride. If you don't skate, you will pick this movie apart. Just have fun with it and don't take it too seriously as there are many flaws. Acting was fun, as in, not great and laughable at times. The skate tricks were cool and relevant. The story line is simply a couple of skate kids trying to throw money together to save their local skate shop from a real estate company looking to take over the property. With a little luck involved, that just might happen!
Its obvious that all these 10 star reviews were left by the cast or friends of the producer. This is The Room of skateboard movies. Almost everything about this movie was a total disaster. Bad acting. Voiceovers that are delayed. Story that is pretty dopey. Awful soundtrack. Do what The Room did and own the fact that your movie is a trainwreck. Don't post false reviews on IMDB to make it seem like this movie isn't complete garbage.
I dont know why so many put 10 out of 10 for this. But guys this is bad. Ok i understand it is low budget and amateur , plot is simple , the acting is below standards, we dont see a lot skating. Avoid it.
This movie had a really great story line with exciting twists and turns. The actors were great and felt authentic throughout the entire film. It's a great family movie and lots of fun to watch!
This movie was amazing ,i loved it made me wanna start skateboarding. Loved seeing little ryden on screen but the rest of the Cast did an amazing job.
This movie was so fun to watch! Great examples of perseverance and dedication to something you love! Great performances by all the cast and loved the soundtrack, too! Hoping for a sequel for sure! Keep on skating! 👏👏👏👏
Realy loved this video and can say that you will like this video. It shows more realistic view how the skate community is and how most of skater are and there are real skaters in this video.
