Classic Peanuts. Classic characters Classic Soundtrack This feels like it could well have been written, 'back in the day'? Wholesome entertainment that glides along in the most relaxing manner. It doesn't patronise or moralise or attempt to force a message, but it has plenty of food for thought and just enough Snoopy and Woodstock. The artwork is timeless and the voice actors are spot on. I think some of the bigger kids on the block could take a lot from this compact movie.... naming no names. Stick to what you are good at. Respect your heritage. Know your audience. If it ain't broke don't fix it. And finally, learn to take good advice ! You know who you are...
'Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcia' (2023) is simply delightful. With Marcia being the highlight and the story, side-characters, and artistic interludes (representing Marcie's inner-world) all bringing enough charm to keep anyone of any age grinning ear to ear. And for this reason it is worth watching even if you are unfamiliar with the Peanuts Gang. This is the first Peanuts film to focus on Marcie and it feels like its been overdue and thankfully it delivered. I'll admit though that I'm biased into loving the original films and tv specials from the 1960s-1970s, and the Apple TV+ art styles don't always feel as warm as the earlier specials did. Sometimes the art style makes good attempt and sometimes better than the "old" specials with representing moods and emotions but the overall style usually feels flat. That is something that kind of holds this special back. However, the artistic interludes representing Marcie's inner thoughts are just dazzling and can although they are short they can even more quickly make you feel all good inside. The story is great, but I think the artistic choices keep this film happily floating. I hope we will see more Marcie in the spotlight in later specials!
I know this is supposed to be a video to inspire people, but if you're not the target audience then the movie is insufferable. And no, that doesn't make my review wrong. Movies and short films are meant to be interesting. This is just basically a bible verse but with The Peanuts IP slapped on it. Marcie is too nervous to say stuff then she's told to not worry and be happy then she fixes all the problems her school has and the movie ends. Nothing really happens. Could this inspire someone? Sure, but that person is not me. Like Possum Reviews said, a movie should be able to stand on it's own merits. I shouldn't have to be the target audience to enjoy a film. 3/10 Very nothing.
I don't know too much about this universe, and I don't even know very well the comic where this story comes from, but I'm sure about something, and it's that Marcy is an inspiration. I'm the opposite of her; I'm an extrovert. I enjoy being in front of crowds and giving big speeches; however, this story taught me how people, no matter if they are talkative or shy, can help get things better even when they stay out of the spotlight. For now on, I am going to see the work of other people with more appreciation, and I know this story will help to get recognized for the work that those people in the background do. Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-kind Marcie is truly one of a kind! In the new and first feature film about the infamous and brilliant Marcie from the Peanuts gang, the true essence of the beloved character is revealed. It's quite different from the style and messages of previous Peanuts films but still with the look and feel we've come to love of the classic franchise. In Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie, Marcie (Arianna McDonald), the main character, is an introvert who struggles with using all her amazing ideas to help solve problems for her friends and classmates on the big stage ... from wanting to solve the pizza shortage at her school, to helping Peppermint Patty (Lexi Perri) with playing golf. Peppermint Patty suggests Marcie run for Class President since she has such great ideas; however, since Marcie is too shy, she doesn't want to do it. Throughout the film, we get to see the challenges Marcie faces while trying to juggle being an introvert and wanting to help everyone. My favorite aspect of this film is what the director Raymond S. Persi refers to as "still picture" scenes, which are used to show Marcie's feeling when talking about not wanting to run for Class President. She goes into her own little world surrounded by black shadows that appear to be "coming for her." This film is unique because the other films tend to focus on Charlie Brown, the whole gang, or characters who are popular, special events, and holidays. Instead this one highlights a personality type and Marcie's challenges. I love that the Executive Producer and son of Charles M. Schultz, Mr. Craig Shultz, drew inspiration for the film from the movie Hidden Figures and wanted to make a film about a smart girl with big ideas that just needed a way to show them off! The message of this film is to just be yourself, be one-of-a-kind. Even if you are introverted, you can do anything and even if you feel overwhelmed, that's okay. You can find other ways to get your ideas out there! In the film, Marcie speaks about this multiple times to herself and to her friends. Don't let your personality type stop you in life. I give Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-kind Marcie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 18, plus adults. By Tiana S., KIDS FIRST!
As much as I love the older Peanuts shorts, they tended to have a problem of recycling jokes that had appeared in comics. The movies did a better job by incorporating larger, more original storylines. But the shows rarely explored other characters in much depth. Sure, Linus shines in the Christmas special, but... Giving the spotlight to Marcie was a fantastic idea. I think Marcie has been a fan favorite, possibly because she didn't seem to have the obvious faults that other characters did. Plus, she seemed somehow more adult than the others. Anyway, this is an exploration of Marcie. Part of it is framed using her relationship with Peppermint Patty, where her advice is indispensable for Patty's golf game. This opens the window to Marcie's love of problem solving. She likes making people happy by making sure things work out. But Marcie is an introvert, and finds that her happiness comes not from recognition, but from the satisfaction of making others happy. Marcie gets uncomfortable when her recognition as a problem-solver gets her elected class president. I found this very touching. I wonder about how it plays to younger kids. I wasn't sure how much a younger audience would appreciate a character-driven story like this, but there's always a chance that some kids out there will find this story important. There aren't enough introverted characters that are treated as normal people. But for adult fans of Peanuts, this is a real quality gem.
