Not worth a watch, don't bother wasting your time. Unrealistic shark behaviour, horrible editing, sharks look horrible and terrible acting but not sure if it was purposely meant to be a little corny. The poor storyline put the icing on the cake as it doesn't really make sense. Not worth a watch, don't bother wasting your time. DONT GO SEE THIS MOVIE I won't waste time going into each individual detail of this movie as every single aspect of this picture is horrendous, unless you would like to watch the worst cgi, silly death scenes and poorly scripted love story then stay clear of this movie, it's incredible that between the movies director, producers writers and editors of this movie not one of them could see that this should not have gone any further than the script, the movie focuses on the wrong main character entirely when there was a much more interesting lead they could've chosen, do not waste your money on this.
A WASTE OF TIME - A CRITICAL REVIEW OF "SOMETHING IN THE WATER" "Something in the Water" is a cinematic disaster that fails on all critical aspects, from the script to the execution. This film is a clear example of how not to approach the shark survival genre. Here is a detailed analysis of why this film deserves only one star. WEAK AND PREDICTABLE SCRIPT The script is extremely weak and filled with clichés. The plot follows a group of friends who face a shark while adrift at sea. Instead of presenting something new or intriguing, the film recycles the same old tropes we've seen in dozens of other genre films. The decisions made by the characters are absurdly illogical, making it impossible to sympathize with or care about any of them. INADEQUATE AND UNBELIEVABLE RESEARCH The lack of research on shark behavior is glaring. The portrayal of the shark in the film is completely unrealistic, from its size to its predatory actions. This is especially frustrating given the easy access to accurate information about these animals. Films like "Jaws" set a standard for shark depiction, and "Something in the Water" fails miserably to follow that example. FORCED DIVERSITY AND DISCONNECTED THEMES The attempt to insert themes of diversity and global warming is so forced it becomes almost insulting. The inclusion of lesbian characters and the mention of global warming seem more like a superficial attempt to tick boxes on a political agenda rather than to enrich the narrative. These elements are introduced so awkwardly that they end up being unnecessary distractions rather than meaningful additions to the story. MEDIOCRE DIRECTION AND ACTING The direction is basic and lacks any creative vision. The actors' performances are exaggerated, and the dialogues are forced and unnatural. The attempt to create drama among the characters, especially with the central lesbian relationship, is superficial and does not contribute to the tension or development of the plot. Instead of creating empathy, these moments end up being irritating and unnecessary. POOR QUALITY VISUAL EFFECTS AND CGI The visual effects are one of the film's weakest points. The shark's CGI is incredibly poorly done, which removes any sense of danger or realism. The scenes that should be tense and exciting become laughable due to the low quality of the special effects. CONCLUSION "Something in the Water" is a complete waste of time. With a predictable script, inadequate research, forced diversity, and poor visual effects, this film fails on all levels. The only emotion it provokes is the frustration of having wasted time watching something so poorly executed. For those looking for a good shark movie, this one should be avoided at all costs.
This film was absolutely fine, but don't be expecting anything new... you won't find it here. I liked the characters, they had a strong friendship and on the whole they behaved fairly sensibly. The actresses did a fine job. And the setting is beautiful. So that's all good! The problem is that we've seen it all before... it's very predictable and that's a real shame. There also isn't enough shark/s in my opinion- which unfortunately makes it a pretty tame watch. It's one of those movies that you'll watch once and that's it. Definitely doesn't compare to the likes of The Shallows or even 47 Metres Down.
Quickly I began cheering for the shark . Why you ask ? Because the whole plot feels false and contrived. It tries so hard, so very very hard, to make you care about the characters and their relationships. Yet fails utterly . I think you're suppossed to feel the warmth of their relationships and see them as real people. So you can feel their loss when the Shark has dinner. Instead, it is portrayed in such a shallow and cringeworthy way, that you hope the Shark has seconds plus a good dessert . The film lacks any relevant information for you to give a damn, except perhaps to hope the shark dines well on the blandness. Whatever is in the water, it aint a good story.
Just Got out of a screening of Something in The Water. Elements of the Film - 📜 - Great Introduction. The Film starts with these 2 Girls who are Partners that suffer an unfortunate incident in London. This obviously completely disrupts their relationship and they subsequently break up. Fast forward 1 Year Later⏩. 🐚 - And we have this group of 5 Women(including the 2 mentioned) at a Summer Wedding Ceremony/Summer Vacation 💐 but Obviously Things Take a Turn for the Worst . 🎨 🎥 - The Colour Grading and Colour Pallette are Gorgeous, Those Blues 💙, Those Yellows 💛 and Those Greens 💚 Really Pop Here. Some Beautiful Cinematography. 🦈 - The Practical and Visual Effects of the Shark were really good (mostly, it gets a bit noticeable near the very end). 🔴 The Death of Cam was Visually Really Surprising. 🎵 - The Score was Really Effective and the Music Song Choices were Excellent Choices to Match the Theme of the Film. Overall, a Visually Beautiful and Really Engaging Watch at the Cinema.
Something in the Water pleasantly surprised me and ended up being a very enjoyable hour and a half. I laughed, I jumped and I generally invested in the characters. Obviously we are not talking Jaws or it's modern CGI spawn like the Meg or a shark invasion under the French capital but as a low budget indie films go it did well. Just like the Spielberg original the director went for the less is more on the CGI sharks which let's you brain fill in the gaps and helps disguise the budget. A great offering for a directorial debut I think we will be seeing more from Hayley Easton Street. If I had a moan it would be about the volume at the beginning of the film but I later found out the Odean Lux Haymarket had failed to get the levels right and that's why it kicked in after quarter of an hour.
I'm not typically a fan of shark movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The film boasts great cinematography, supported by a very clever score, which kept me on the edge of my seat multiple times. The all-women cast directed by a female director is a refreshing approach, offering an entertaining movie with more suspense than gore, peppered with some funny one-liners. This genre is notoriously difficult to tackle. If you're expecting full-on gore, you might be disappointed. It's clear that the budget constraints posed some challenges, and the script could have been tighter. However, the cinematography, location, acting, and the exceptional score more than compensate for the gaps that the most critical viewers might notice. Any movie can be picked apart for flaws, but it's important to consider the context. For a low-budget indie film, Easton-Street managed to elevate the script and keep us on the edge of our seats. Overall, it's a fantastic job that deserves recognition.
This film had promise from the trailer (albeit with a story lacking any sense of originality but that's fine - sometimes we just want a good shark film). The strength in this film is with how it doesn't show the shark to start with, other than a fin. A page taken from Jaws' playbook but, when that fin "looks" to do a handbrake turn when the shark senses blood, we know we're in trouble and everything is about to go downhill... And it does. The over head shots of the shark in the water are okay but the constant - shark lunging for victim - shots are some of the worst CGI I've seen. But this isn't the worst thing about this film. That "accolade" goes to the acting and stupid script. Example of script: Women in water, shark circling them. They panic (fair). One of them cracks a "joke" about dying from a shark attack in Manchester due to global warming. The women start to laugh whole-heartedly. THERE IS A SHARK CIRCLING YOU AND ONE OF YOU IS BLEEDING TO DEATH!!!! I could say more but honestly, I'm annoying I wasted 86 minutes of my life on this. Give it a skip and remember the name of those who made this atrocity so you can avoid future work too. It's THAT bad.
