Didn't like the gay stuff but movie has a great msg however could have made it pace a bit better
Creepy atmosphere, good acting and so many turns. Gripping from start to finish.
Unlike others, I liked this movie....I have seen much worse in the theaters before...Shudder has been on a roll lately putting out some pretty good stuff...Keep it up Shudder, you get my $5 a month for a while longer..
I don't know why people have rated this film so poorly. Although there may be the impression by some that because this film centres on two gay characters that it is some kind of identity politicised propaganda - It isn't. The story is well written and skilfully produced in bringing all of the characters in to something that is believable and which unfolds in unexpected way. The acting by all of the cast is superb. This isn't a gory horror by any means. It takes you in the world of the characters - rather one character in particular - and the terror that gradually leads to the climax of the story when everything becomes clear. Well worth watching.
This movie had a really good plot, however I do feel like they could have delivered the "scary" thrill of the story more effectively. I enjoyed the creepy neighbourhood vibe that got us wondering what was going on. The main actor was great and I felt invested in his story and his journey with being a young gay man and the things he has had to battle through in life. If the story cut the middle section and became more clear it would have been better in my opinion. I loved the ending! I predicted it but it was done so well!
This is a typical Colin Minihan script. A bit hokey with all of his signature type scares. This film isn't even really a horror movie but rather an experimental drama/mystery film. Most of the run time is devoted to the dynamics and relationships within the main family, leaving very little to chew on for horror fans. The violence doesn't come into play until the final 10 or 15 minutes but by this point we are just waiting for this boring and pointless film to end. What violence there is, is not effective enough and is a bit sudden. Malik makes a drastic decision at the end of the movie that comes out of nowhere. Wouldn't he have known it would only end him up in jail? A place where he can't do anything but admire his "partner" from afar? At that point he can only HOPE Aaron and his daughter don't fall prey to what he believes is a cult that murders minorities and pins their own crimes on them. Malik had no concrete proof and shooting the ring leader would only presumably make the cult more angry, would it not? Also, the drama the movie so desperately tries to portray and thinks is so cool is actually very lackluster. Everything just seemed so shallow and fake. Its a bit of a "look at me! Im making a movie about gay men" type thing for Colin Minihan, following his film "What Keeps You Alive" which was about a lesbian couple and was WAY better. I actually really like that movie. "Spiral" is a major dud however. It reminds me a bit of Jay Baruchel's new film "Random Acts of Violence" in the sense that both that movie and "Spiral" seem to have something important to say about society but both fall flat on their faces while attempting to get their point across. Weak all around. Not scary at all. Not even a horror movie. A random, shallow. And weird movie with annoying and uninteresting characters.
This film highly engages in creating suspense and mystery around the seemingly satanic cannabilism practices that targeted homosexual couples, only because they were the only unconventional and ideal targets available in this small community. The only critique was the unexplained purpose of the group and what they were all about and why the creature had to feed on girls every ten years. Started off great, got weird, and the ending was extremely dissatisfying.
This film tries its best to be thrilling with a storyline about a same sex couple with a teenage daughter moving into a new neighborhood. One of the leads had had a traumatic incident from his past & the movie plays on whether or not this paranoia is clouding his judgements on the residents there. It interjects some social commenting about issues a gay couple may face moving to a new town juxtaposed against his fears that the residents are not what they first appear... His partner is sceptical about his feelings/paranoia and instead dismisses it in spite of his insistent. It is almost like an arty film that is made to appease the critics and one cannot help but notice the pretentiousness of it. If this sounds like something you may be interested in watching then go for it but for the rest of us I would stay well clear of this film.
It's nice to see bigger budgeted gay-themed movies like this, but it's simultaneously, it's sad that this is incredibly unoriginal and predictable. But, that's really for the first 2 acts. I will say the climax made up for most of the movie's faults, like watching our lead made one DUMB decision after another. Like he thought out each scenario and did the opposite of the correct way to handle it. Still, it's passible especially for light-movie watchers.
