This movie is so very poor. I wanted to watch it as i thought by the title it would be your standard bad horror movie. It however ended up being far worse than that. The story of this movie is so very poor. Basically a story of corruption and a haunting of a particular cell. The story wasn't all-over the place and/or confusing to a fault, it was simply just bad. Nothing interesting and/or enjoyable when it came to the story. I was slightly (but only ever so slightly) interested in the corruption element towards the beginning, however it turned out to be bad through and through. The cast where fine i guess, but nobody stood out. The main character was fine in terms of acting and character but nothing special. Average down to a T. The other characters where in a similar position as well where i didn't find them particularly bad, just not good either. Although not always a bad thing, i should point out that there are very few characters in this movie. A little talk about a pet-peeve of mine during my watching of this movie. The constant Shakespeare quotes between the Warden and Charlie where absolutely terrible. I despise cringe as it makes me feel so very uncomfortable. This was so very bad it actually made me feel horrible. The movie script in general seemed pretty poor. The film suffered (i believe) more from a poor script more than it did bad actors. The Shakespeare wasn't the only poor line but by far the worst. Constant and cringe. Before i end this review i must say that this isn't at all horror. Not a single scare. Atmosphere was crappy and there are no jumpy moments. Story - 2/10 Cast - 4.5/10 Horror - 0.5/10 Script - 2/10 Overall, this movie wasn't terrible, but it was just so unbelievably boring. Don't recommend, 2/10.
Oct. 10 Here's The 4K Lowedown on "The Haunting of Alcatraz" (NR - 2020 - Blu) Genre: Horror/Paranormal My Score: 3.2 Cast=3 Acting=2 Plot=6 Ending=4 Story=3 Scare=1 Jump=3 F/X=2 Creep=4 Twist=4 Alcatraz. 1937. A young prison guard working the night shift experiences a string of chilling disturbances culminating in the bizarre death of an inmate at the most famous prison in the world. "One thing's for sure...I won't step foot in cell 13." I read that this was a period piece set in 1937 about cell 13 in solitary. I have been in this cell and there is an entity there, so I bought this movie. Boy was this a steaming pile of crap. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading the box more than watching the movie within. You might want to avoid this one.
Total pure unadulterated rubbish. Don't consider wasting your life watching it. The story is incredible dull and boring. The acting is probably bested by a group of toddlers. This is apparently set in 1937 yet the quality is so awful they didn't even hide modern fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and other modern technology.
Characters were boring. Boring storyline. More like a campfire story. Laughing all the way through it. No ghostly haunting at all. So they say you can hear them up & down the hallway but Ed never leaves cell 13. More kid scary than adult.
I'm giving it a 10 to adjust for the nonsensical 1-star reviews. This is definitely not a 1-star movie. I was surprised how good it was and I enjoyed it way more than I typically do with these haunting type films. This was almost like a 1930's style mystery with a horror bend, and it's cool because it takes place in the '30's and plays off of that in really clever ways. If you keep that in mind, this will be a really fun movie. If you expect a slasher movie in a prison, you will be disappointed because there is far more here and it is a character-driven story with an unfolding mystery that makes you question if there's a supernatural element or what is really going on. There were some cool metaphors and Shakespeare played a part. And I was also taken in by the side love story and found it to be cleverly written in that 1930's sensibility. It was just a really good movie with a satisfying ending and I'm going to watch it again. Recommended for those that like something a little different.
Terrible movie .Watched from start to finish ,so not the worst .Low budget and it shows .Ridiculous story line in fairness .Just creepy more than scary
This has to be the WORST movie in history. It looks like they did the movie with 5 bucks of budget.. terrible.
Barely scary and it's extremely slow on getting To any actual scary parts. It seemed very fake and acting was absolutely ridiculous it actually made me laugh. If you're looking for a good horror don't watch this. Never watching it again.
And as such, it reaches a kind of brilliance. At no time do you get a sense of anyone else, other than the tiny cast, populating what is clearly a tiny derelict set ,representing the bustling Alcatraz of 1937/42. There are only 2 sweeping external views of Alcatraz, one by air, one by sea. In one, you get a glimpse of one of the modern passenger ferries that go and fro. In both, the place is clearly , as it is in the indoor sets, derelict. It's almost an unsettling effect of how deserted the place is from start to finish, and how all we get to see are 2 tiny empty corridors (one with a pair of fold away chairs in) and 2 tiny offices. I would say this is best reviewed as a 5th form movie project. Clearly the director is studying the arts, and has been told to study a Shakespeare play, which is the only possible explanation for the shallow, poorly executed references to hamlet that keep cropping up. Anyone who has reviewed this higher than 2 stars is clearly related to the director or on the payroll. The only thing that is in any way disconcerting about the whole movie is that the "ghost" is called Ed Wutz, pronounced more like "woods" which makes me wonder whether there is a small chance that it may actually be a deliberate pitch at being the worst film ever made in defiance of the true master of the genre, rather than an accidental train wreck of a "movie".
