this movie broke my heart 😭😭😭
Covering the WWII RAF raid 'Operation Carthage' Some harrowing scenes that added to the realism. And good acting from the children involved. Apart from the necessary sub plot it's pretty much true to the actual train of events and well worth a viewing. Brings home the horrors of collateral damage in wars.
I've never really understood the term friendly fire, it's a term used in the war time when a Allied troops or planes accidentally kills or Injures troops or civilians of an allied country. There really is nothing friendly about this especially when it came to the 86 children killed during the bombing raid on the Copenhagen Gestapo offices in 1945. You can't help but feel this was something that should never have happened with experienced crew as the war reached its conclusion, especially as it was a daytime raid. I was aware of the story but as it brought to life in this heartbreaking film really brings home the true pointlessness of war. Have we learnt from this? I write this piece whilst the current war is taking place in the Ukraine and hundreds of civilians are being murdered by Russian cruise missiles. This mission whilst achieving its main objective of destroying the Gestapo headquarters the deaths of those innocent children make it one of the lowest points in the history of the RAF.
I thought this film was going to be a slow burn, but I was completely wrong. From story line to the acting, everything about this movie blew me away. Such a tragic tale and the producers, directors, cast, made u feel like u were in the middle of it all. It's a heartbreaking, true story and you'll realize how much the innocent suffer during times of war. Don't miss this one!!
This could have been a great movie about the accidental bombing of a school in Copenhagen, during the last months of nazi occupation. Writer/director Ole Bornedal made a name for himself, when he made the hugely successful Danish movie, Nightwatch, almost 30 years ago. Since then he has written and directed a bunch of movies, more or less disappointing. So it comes as no surprise to me, that.'The Shadow in My Eye" didn't live of to my expectations. He should really get a screenwriter onboard next time, and not allowed 100% creative control, because the missed opportunities are plentiful. For example, are we suppose to feel anything when a protagonist dies, if we aren't invested in them? This movie should have been full of emotional beats. But it all feels very rushed here, and 'The Shadow in My Eye' should at least have been half an hour longer, giving us time to learn about some of the characters. So we are left with a short disaster movie that uses CGI and tries its best to look like Copenhagen, although the whole movie was shot in Prague. It also ends very abruptly, with no aftermath, so we have no idea about what happened to the fictional leads. This is probably one of the only movies dealing with the occupation of Denmark 1940-1945, that I cannot recommend.
This story is so poorly written, and the dialog awful that I simply had to quit mid through the film. The viewer gets the impression that the writer and director has an axe to grind against religion. There are long dialogs and scenes that ridicule the nuns and make them look like fools, which really has nothing to do with the theme. Instead of presenting the French School in a respectful way, the movie is a turn-off. This is the last movie produced by Ole Bornedal I will watch.
Bon film !
It's obvious from the first 20 minutes that a mature and skilled screenwriter was working on something else because this feels like it was written by a teenager. There are several over-the-top situations almost immediately that delve into the realm of implausibility. Even though terrible things do happen in life, especially in conflict, in a film you need a little bit more skill to pull off such events. There is no nuance. There is no subtlety. There's no motivations for characters. Its all very heavy handed in an immature way. That's just the opening. People behave in immature ways. Unrealistic ways. It's just one injustice after another. This was written by someone who does not know how to craft a script. Or seem to understand adult emotions. The religious angle was ludicrous. People giving it 10 out of 10 either haven't seen enough decent films or are letting their patriotism speak for them. Such serious subject matter deserves far better treatment.
Just when you think there aren't any more stories to tell about WW2, you stumble across something that you'd never heard of before. This film dramatises the real life events (towards the end of the war) where the RAF went on a mission to bomb the HQ of the Gestapo in Denmark. Unfortunately, some of the aircraft mistakenly bomb a catholic school full of children, killing a substantial number of them and their teachers. It's not often I think a film is too short, but this one could have done with being a bit longer. Whilst the production design was excellent and the set up of the characters was good, the aftermath of the actual bombardment felt a bit rushed. As a result, I'm not sure it had the emotional impact it could have had. One of the main problems was that I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. I'm guessing some of the side stories were fictional and put in for dramatic effect but, due to the short running time, they didn't really get that much space to develop. The ending was a mix of relief and sadness. I assumed Teresa and Rigmor didn't survive, but their names were not included in the list of people who lost their lives in the credits which, per my comment above, made me think they were fictional characters. Worth a look, but ultimately I felt it could have had more depth.
This is a harrowing World War 2 story, with a deep emotional impact earned through distinctive characters. Spartacus Super Bowl won't say much more, to avoid spoilers, but the child actors in this Danish film are truly wonderful.
