We never find out anything about whether the protagonist's boyfriend or sister question her absence during her body disposal spree. Cannot understand why the creators of the film fail to attach any. Simple minded and ill conceived.
The story follows an overly emotional, manic depressant, pommy chick who needs to be either the centre of the party or ruins the party. After flirting all night with her friend's husband she wakes to him taking advantage of her and that sends her into a downward spiral. The performances and cinematography are good, plus there's some nice practical gore FX, but the story is almost non-existent. The trailer review quote says "Unflinching and Brutal", but I definitely saw a wiener flinching somewhere lol. I think they've copied Antichrist (2009) in a way.
Plenty of difficult subject matter (and some pretty viscerally affecting violence), but the approach never feels lurid or exploitative. Instead, the little touches in writing, directing, and (especially) acting, combine for an artful and intelligent treatment of challenging (also timely and pressing!) themes. An effective balance of arthouse and grindhouse sensibilities. I'm very eager to see what these filmmakers do next!
This film start with a wild dog biting away it's prey, and a couple driving in a car scene! As turnout, this film is about a woman "Miriam" dreaming she killing her brother-in law! Entire film full of boring conversation, and super annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the song playing at the background scene, overuse of the annoying sound effect scene, overuse of the burning scene, overuse of the crying scene, overuse of the sleeping scene, overuse of the preparing food scene, overuse of the long angle scenery scene, and overuse of the changing camera angle scene! Make the film super unwatchable! At the end, we found out the killing is just a dream of Miriam! That's it! Wasting time to watch!
A totally piss-poor film. Trying to make some statement of revenge, but it becomes a jumbled mess. None...I repeat NONE of the characters are at all, well... likeable. Hope they all got decent paychecks for this.
What the actual?.. too slow, too many fillers, music drives you crazy, think it's supposed to be all symbolic and stuff....but nah, just does not get better.
This was a very slow build up. I could tell it was going to take forever when I saw the time length. For me as a horror fan if the film doesn't have any celebrity or director I know of - I generally don't watch it unless it catches my interest within 10 min, a good start or something good to keep me watching. This was slow and focused more on the nature and photography which I don't mind, but when it's a horror film it shouldn't be this slow for something to have caught my eye. I couldn't waste any more of my time and anyone that isn't a fan of something that takes forever to build something up at the very least for a horror film don't waste your time. Shudder made this sound like a really great film but I just couldn't waste any more time on this. The movie The Cleansing Hour was way better and caught my eye and had me interested and glad I ditched this movie.
And so vindictive on raw violation that my jaw just dropped of. Some people say cannibal holocaust is the grossest of headless grotesque filmaking and, well, this film is a close race to the just mentioned. Its a disturbing story about a couple visiting another, the women are related, and both couples marriages is in critical conditions, and in the aftermath of a blackout alcohol consumption party by the bonfire makes one of the women go of the hinges after being sexually violated, in a dellirious act of revenge, raw violence, and a way of doing the deeds reminds me of historical medeval hangmen under the motto'' hanging, drawing and quatering'' the culprit.( see website capital punishment UK) This is a film that will satisfy 1 pr 100000, its gross on everything because its looks so darn realistic and the human pain and deprevation is so allabsorbing, and the ultragory orgy of grotesque revenge will haunt you for days to come. Filmatographicly its a well made product, and the music made for this project is just as nervewrecking as the slaying. The grumpy old man doesnt recommend a watch. This is not gory horror, rather a truthfully realistic act of bestialic murder.
Just finished watching this film at TIFF. Talk about a raw, visceral experience. Definitely not for the faint of heart, as the subject matter is quite intensely disturbing and the film is not shy with violence. I think there are few films that truly capture the sense of vulnerability and loneliness that one experiences in a betrayal of the worst kind. How the entire world seems to turn against you. Bold film, with a captivating central performance. Wow.
If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog :) This is my first viewing of a Madeleine Sims-Fewer - also the protagonist - and Dusty Mancinelli's film. I added Violation to my Sundance's schedule due to the macabre yet interesting premise, and I knew it wasn't just another random rape-revenge movie. The first half clearly demonstrates how impactful and visually shocking Sims-Fewer and Mancinelli want their film to be, but the final act stretches the story a bit too far for my taste. Still, it's a movie with an evident purpose that justifies all the cruelty with a traumatizing event that many women, unfortunately, have to deal with. From explicit male nudity - something quite rare - to the excruciatingly long takes, Adam Crosby's lingering camera transforms already gruesome, vomit-inducing scenes into something even more difficult of keeping the eyes on the screen. I instinctively looked away in certain seconds. Miriam's turn to the Dark Side is depicted in a slightly abrupt way, and her revenge takes an excessively ruthless path I struggle to accept as something remotely possible. Some actions just raise one too many questions that ultimately hurt the narrative for me. Despite the horrible event that changed her life, Sims-Fewer's character isn't exactly someone easy to root for since she wasn't the best sister/wife way before that moment. Some character moments feel earned, while others are just violent for the sake of visual shock. Regarding the cast, everyone's great, but Sims-Fewer delivers a powerful performance that left me feeling uneasy throughout the entire runtime. Technically, a final praise to Andrea Boccadoro's score, which is incredibly ominous, contributing to the suspenseful, eerie atmosphere, but occasionally it's just overwhelmingly distracting. Violation is one of the most visually shocking, gruesome, disgusting films I've seen in quite some time. Madeleine Sims-Fewer shares direction and writing credits with Dusty Mancinelli, but she also portrays a somewhat divisive protagonist. While I understand her reasons and absolutely despise what happens to her, she isn't exactly an easy character to connect with or even root for. The narrative follows an extremely dark path of revenge, told through an interesting nonlinear storytelling structure. However, its setup is slightly rushed and developed beyond my limit of fictional logic and comprehension. Despite being excessively violent at times, most of the brutal scenes feel justified. I deeply appreciate the lingering cinematography and the ominous score. I recommend it to non-sensitive viewers who'd like a more meaningful take on the revenge subgenre. Rating: B
