Para Marisa Midori, da Escola de Comunicações e Artes da USP e autora do prefácio da nova edição, a obra insere a história do livro dentro da história européia. Lucien Febvre, em 1958, quando o livro foi publicado, já era o famoso fundador da Ecole dos Annales; já Henri-Jean Martin começava sua carrreira de bibliotecário.
