I actually was an extra on the show, and am a big fan of steph, and was looking forward to it being good but very disappointed. The writing here is plain bad. This show suffers from an extremely predictable story line, unfunny script, and bad acting - with the exception of the actors that play the daughter and grandfather. I may have smirked a couple of time in the 6 episodes but it's mostly a snooze fest. The tongue in cheek humor just falls flat. Curry and. Nwodim do a decent job of not acting but just playing themselves? The production quality and editing is very underwhelming also. Save yourself 3 hours and skip this.
Mr. Throwback Season 1 - 8.2 - As a fan of both basketball and Steph Curry, I was pleasantly surprised by this comedy. The show is unlike anything I expected when I first hit play. The sitcom-style documentary format caught me off guard but ended up delivering some seriously funny scenes. It's not at all what you'd expect from a show featuring Steph Curry as himself, especially given the dark and edgy humor sprinkled throughout. With just six episodes, each around 30 minutes, it's an easy binge-watch. The humor really hits, especially as the lies pile up, leading to some great laughs. The premise is hilarious: a kid who was once hailed as the best 12-year-old basketball player in the country, and who started over Steph, is later revealed to be a 14-year-old fraud. Fast forward 25 years, and while Steph is, well, Steph, Danny's life is an absolute mess. The mockumentary style fits perfectly, and Danny, despite his awful behavior, remains a lovable idiot you can't help but root for. The "Stephenomics" bit was a highlight for me, it's meant to be a parody, but the points made were so spot-on that they felt almost real. My favorite character, though, has to be Danny's ex-wife, played by Ayden Mayeri. She was hilarious in every scene, her humor providing the perfect counterbalance to Danny's antics. For any basketball fan, this show is a must-watch. It's funny, clever, and features some great performances. Official sundaynightstreaming on instagram rating of 8.2.
This movie is so epic and strictly comedy. Steph Curry can even fit in any movie as a big character. Danny was so such mysterious man with different personalities so that he could reach at his dreams through the big lie for body fake health issues for his little girl. Am still waiting if there's going to be a plot to release the season two for this such wonderful story. And Steph has to be a big part of this film because he can play different roles and be very creative with his special abilities of talent. Am rating this movie at 9.7 percent because it's for my Idol and very great showman on and off the court. Award winning Series.
There are so many problems with the show it's hard to know where to begin. Problem #1 - it's not funny. Yes, there are some giggles and a few laughs, but most of the time it's simply not funny. Problem #2 - bad acting. Maybe it's not so much the bad ac ting as it is the lack of comedy, but either way, not very entertaining to watch. Problem #3 - preposterous. Yes, it's not a likely story and it seems so staged it's not captivating. Problem #4 - Who really cares? The "star" of this show is a "nerdowell" who lies, cheats, and otherwise represents a kind of hero it's hard to cheer for. I didn't find a single saving grace in the first show, so won't watch any more.
I will start off with these for context: 1) yes I'm an Adam Pally fan (Mindy project, happy endings, anything else he is in I've liked), 2) I LOVE Ego! How could you not - she is hilarious on SNL and shines in this 3) how can you not be a fan of Steph Curry?! Precious. 4) cringe comedy tends to always have me DYING - aka I loved The Curse, Nathan for You, and Jury Duty. All of which So I'm here for shows like this in general. Like one other reviewer said - it's interesting this wasn't promoted much - why?! - I only came across it from browsing on Peacock only. My boyfriend and I binged the entire (short) season in one night. If you like Adam's other stuff, current SNL, or other cringe comedy, this is for you. If you dislike him, can't stand satire or self-deprecating humor, pass on it and don't bash this show or the cast and crew just because it's not your thing. I literally fell down laughing a few times. Some of the lines or reactions are hilarious. Wait for the "gifts are my love language" line! The Mocktails! I could not hold it together watching those scenes 🤣 The whole cast, including the daughter and the crazy father, brings something funny to the show. It's such a random pairing but it worked. I'm hoping for another season, if only for laughs and more cringe.
I watched this show just because I'm a Steph fan and didn't expect much because, let's face it, athletes usually suck at acting... but I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Every episode had at least one laugh-out-loud moment, and even though the arc was predictable, the show still pulled it off nicely. That said, Steph is my new favorite NBA Player/Actor. Lebron was funny in Trainwreck, Ray Allen was solid in He Got Game, Kareem was iconic in Bruce Lee's Game of Death, Kyrie was decent in Uncle Drew, and I have to give an honorable mention to Shaq for all the effort in his flicks... but Steph killed it in Mr. Throwback.
But, I'm SO over these thin outline teleplays, jusv have em improv a bunch of takes and see what sticks - it's SO LAZY and it's always SO OBVIOUS - So how can we convey to the powers that be, that we want well thought teleplays and screenplays - oiled and polished thru writers rooms, table reads, rehearsals WHATEVER just not endless improvisation - I realize it's cheaper and easier for them to make but maybe if Lorne Michael's stop bankrolling all his veteran snl'ers for these moon shot shows (Keenan anyone? Peeyew! And that was one of the most talented comedians in the game) JUST DO IT CORRECTLY! Cause it stinks to high heaven and the golden age of TV has become the much patina'd copper, and that's being generous Steph was ok and I'm also not a sports fan other than F1 so I wasn't biased (like I was with Pally, no PAL of mine I tells you)
One of the best shows of the summer! Steph was surprisingly good. Looking forward to watching a second season. The characters need to live on. My favorite part of the show was the ending. Watching how everything unfolds is great. My only criticism of the show was that six episodes seemed like not enough time to get really get to know every character. I want more of everyone and everything. That's all I got. I hope this review helps people want to watch the show because it truly is one of the best shows of the summer and the cast is unbelievable. They are laugh out loud funny. And show has heart which is important in todays world.
Given the lack of promotion around this show, I went in with pretty low expectations. But after watching all six episodes, I would definitely recommend it--particularly if you're a fan of Happy Endings, the prior collaboration of Adam Pally and David Caspe. While it doesn't have quite as high of a joke per minute ratio as that show, it has a similar sensibility and many clever set-ups and payoffs. Steph Curry isn't an actor, obviously, but is surprisingly charming here. And major props to the casting director for finding Layla Scalisi. There are so many shows that have been hampered by less than great child actors, but she is genuinely hilarious in her role. I really hope this one gets a second season.
Good movie!
