It's True I know, and hard to believe....I know...I know. Nobody would ever describe me as arrogant! But I digress. As a bartender I come up against people's reluctance to drink gin. It's funny to think that the preference of vodka as the clear spirit of choice can be traced back to the 1940's and a campaign against gin by a company (which no longer exists) called the Heublein Company (also known for the bottled drink Brass Monkey made famous in a Beastie Boys song) which was representing Smirnoff Vodka. At the time Gin was king and Vodka was an obscure spirit nobody wanted to drink as it was closely related to Russia. But they hatched a plan when inspiration struck in a Sunset Boulevard bar and marketed a drink called the Moscow Mule and set into motion the fall of gin. So my question has always been, can people still really be victims of a 1940's anti-Gin marketing campaign And as I have made a career of trying to get people to understand gin again and realize it's potential and superiority over Vodka (for cocktails anyway) I have to say that I think so. They always come up with the same three or four reasons about why they don't like gin: 1. They drank too much cheap gin got too drunk and can't stand the sight of it (a fair reason I guess) 2. Can't stand Juniper flavor 3. I'm allergic to gin/juniper (this last one is possible but usually not the case) and 4. I hate the taste of alcohol/spirits so I like to hide the vodka flavor with juices. So I came up with this Gin cocktail challenge to illustrate not only that most people DO NOT hate gin, but the versatility and potential of Gin as a spirit. The thing is, Gin is a spirit you have to know how to use. And it's easy, if you don't pair the flavors of the botanicals correctly, to make terrible drinks. It takes a bit of understanding but when you do understand this spirit, it opens up a whole new world to you. I have a 99% success rate with this challenge, most people can't look me in the eye and say they hat. This is a Hip Hop & Rap series and has received a rating of 7.1/10 from 0 viewers.
