It follows the story of Publisher's Summary “The queen of beach reads” (New York) delivers an immensely satisfying pause-resister in this tale about a summer of scandal at a storied Nantucket hotel. Fresh off a bad breakup with a longtime boyfriend, Nantucket sweetheart Lizbet Keaton is desperately seeking a second act. When she’s named the new general manager of the Hotel Nantucket, a once Gilded Age gem turned abandoned eyesore, she hopes that her local expertise and charismatic staff can win the favor of their new London billionaire owner, Xavier Darling, as well as that of Shelly Carpenter, the wildly popular Instagram tastemaker who can help put them back on the map. And while the Hotel Nantucket appears to be a blissful paradise, complete with a celebrity chef-run restaurant and an idyllic wellness center, there’s a lot of drama behind closed doors. The staff (and guests) have complicated pasts, and the hotel can’t seem to overcome the bad reputation it earned in 1922 when a tragic fire killed 19-year-old chambermaid Grace Hadley. With Grace gleefully haunting the halls, a staff harboring all kinds of secrets, and Lizbet’s own romantic uncertainty, is the Hotel Nantucket destined for success or doom? Filled with the emotional depth and multiple points of view that characterize Hilderbrand’s novels (The Blue Bistro, Golden Girl) as well as an added dash of Roaring Twenties history, The Hotel Nantucket offers something for everyone in this compelling summer drama. I couldn't even get through the book- it seemed like she was trying WAY too hard to appeal to younger readers (a la Millenials and Gen Z) but it came off desperate and cheesy. As someone who is in Gen Z, it felt like I was reading a YA novel (was it really necessary to include a list of all of the pop songs on her breakup playlist???) and did not think that it deserved all of the raving reviews I am seeing it receive. The story seemed disjointed and there were so many characters with small blurbs of background but no direct focus on the development of any of the characters. Overall, disappointed as this is my first Elin Hilderbrand book and I was hoping it would live up to the hype.
Did not understand why this is rated so highly. No offense to the author. Not my type of book.
Why was there so many lists. The song lists went on for two minutes each. I had to skip through them. Wasted my credit on this.
I've listened to many of Elin Hildebrand 's books. This is the worst one. So depressing and all over the place. Not one story was fully told and addressed. Just rushed at the end to tie up. The "ghost" is an idea, I think she started either, than let go of. The book was actually quite stressful. If I wanted to be stressed and annoyed, I'd of worked at a Summer hotel . People read her books to escape, not hear about rape, stressful work environments, depression, etc. I yelled out at the characters just trying to get through it. I got through it, because I couldn't get a refund. I've listened to many Elin Hildebrand books. This is my last one.
The Hotel Nantucket was a slice of life type of novel. There’s a lot of different characters that you follow & learn stories about, making the moral of the story pretty straightforward (and explicitly stated multiple times in the novel). I was expecting more to happen but there wasn’t much of a plot in my opinion. I also didn’t enjoy how it seemed like the author was trying SO hard to stay relevant - name dropping pop culture references and all. I wouldn’t recommend it.
I listen to my books while driving, and on this one, every time I got in the car I thought I was starting a new book, it was so disjointed.I finished only because I did not have another book lined up.And a ghost, come on Elin, you are better than this.
The audio performance was the only reason I was able to finish this book. The plot was thin and the story just was not very engaging.
I struggled to finish this one. There's too many characters and I found it hard to keep track of them. Then there's a ghost that has a role...I wasn't expecting that. It also was predictable at the end. Glad its done
Tried way to hard to be woke & relevant. No doubt she had a flow chart crossing off all groups and new vocabulary. This will be my last book by Elin Hilderbrand and I will NO longer recommend her books . I have enjoyed 6 or so books by her in the past . To bad she fell off the cliff on this one .
