Starting his career off as the Greenwich blueblood, Hunter seemed destined to stay in the WWF's midcard during the mid 90s, but an on-screen partnership with friend Shawn Michaels would elevate Triple H to the next level. When Shawn retired in 1998, many thought Triple H might've floundered back into the WWF's midcard. The night after WrestleMania XIV, Triple H famously "picked up the ball" that Shawn dropped, creating his own D-Generation X stable that went on to became insanely popular. Wanting more from his wrestling career though, Triple H made the decision to leave DX at the height of their popularity. HHH wanted to become the biggest heel in WWF history and he wanted the WWF Championship, something that wasn't afforded to him while he was in D-Generation X.
