The show featured a bunch of traditional Survivor Series matches, the televised in-ring debut of Kane and the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Everything that happened on the show, however, would get overshadowed by the WWF Championship main event match; Bret "Hitman" Hart vs Shawn Michaels. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels rivalry began like any other feud. Michaels defeated Hart at WrestleMania XII back in 96 and when the Hitman returned to TV, he vowed to win back his WWF championship from HBK. As 1997 continued on, Hart and Michaels developed real-life issues with some of these issues making it to TV and things got so bad that both men said they would never lose to one another in the ring (even if the script said otherwise). Hart signed with WCW when Vince McMahon told Bret that he could no longer afford his contract, and so Bret was asked to drop his championship belt to Shawn at Survivor Series in Montreal. Bret refused, so he and McMahon came up with a DQ finish and Hart was expected to drop the belt either on Raw is War the following night or at a different unspecified date.
