If you have plans to watch this during the Christmas week or worse, on Christmas Eve/Day please don't. This will ruin it. There was so much they could have done but didn't. There's no Rudolph, not a single song, no Christmassy feel and overall the story is extremely childish and uninteresting. The only good thing is it's visuals. But if you ask me, spending so much on such a boring story is not worth it at all. This is not a Santa origin story. Don't be fooled. This feels more like a Fanta (Guy who thinks is Santa and ends up creeping out people in their homes and scaring children on the streets)origin story rather than a Santa origin story. The characters too are annoying and especially that rat. Whoever voiced it didn't do a good job at all. Plus the writing is pathetic. Its one Liners come across as annoying rather than funny. The kid again, quite boring. There's nothing special about him and you don't even care a bit about him. Bad casting but extremely poor writing is what I would say caused at least me to feel this way about him. Then there are the elves who you'd never tell are elves if it weren't for their characters which reveal it themselves. No effort at all was put in making them seem like elves. Some of them literally have rubber ears that you could get in a costume shop down your street. Overall this is a very underwhelming film and there's nothing Christmassy about it. Even the bgm is plain and boring. I repeat don't watch it around Christmas as it will dampen your spirits rather than lift them up.
I have no idea how this made it to television. By far the worst Christmas movie I've ever seen. If you value your time start away from this movie! So St. Movie parents were a kidnapper and I don't even know about the mother because their was no story.
Just charming . It is the fair definition of this film about roots of Christmas gifts tradition. It is charming, first, for Maggie Smith and Jim Broadbet and for Toby Jones. It is charming for the truths and for the flavor of old fairy tales, so fresh, so soft, so bitter and wise. It is charming for the adorable end. Bad points - easy to say the political correctness not elegant deep traces. Or the ignore, again, of the simple, real significance of feast of Nativity . Or to ignore Saint Hierarch Nicholas. But... . The young Henry Lawfull is just good worker for a nice Nicholas. And the film is not , exactly , for children but more for inner child of parents. The cultural references is the basic proof. Yes, I like it. For actors, humor, inspired portrait of sacrifice for loved one and lost of parent. And, not doubts, for Maggie Smith. Her presence in cast was, I admitt, the first and powerful kick to see this film.
Netflix struggle to make decent movies at the best of times. They have a habit of pushing politics rather than good story telling. This film tries to be more about story and less about politics, however, it struggles to do so. This is a nice film. It has some great acting. It has some beautiful cinematography. What is struggles with is the heart. At many times, I felt as if the creators didn't believe in the message they were selling. Despite best efforts of the actors, they struggled to make this film work. It's a nice film. If you have young children, they are very likely to enjoy themselves watching this. However, I would suggest that Netflix have a long way to go in making decent films for entertainment purposes. It's probably time they find a new leadership team for their film making.
Couldn't finish watching! Not compelling. Only if you're woke obsessive will you continue with this movie past 15 minutes. For the rest of of us reasonable watchers--a hard pass!
