When you start watching a movie and the 20 first minutes are boring, it's difficult to keep going. And it takes no time to notice that boring scenes just keep stretching and stretching. You want them to end, but they're there to torture you endlessly. Did not laugh a single time.
Not bad. Moved the time somewhat. I really like j.k. simmons acting, and think he mad this movie much better than it was. I've always liked him, and thought that the "tough dad" part really fitted him. not the greatest comedy of all time, but not bad at all. worth the hour and a half.
Before seeing this film, I thought JK could walk on water. And truth be told, he's ok in this film, he just got dealt HORRIBLE lines and scenes to act. The whole thing is just a mess, one stupid unbelievable situation after the next. A lot of good talent gone to waste here, including SNL alums Killam and Schaal. I was embarrassed for them in various ridiculous set-ups throughout the movie. The ONLY reason I watched the whole thing was to see how much worse it would get, and that it did. A real turd duster, let me take this one for the team and you all skip it. Life is short, don't give up 90 precious minutes of your time for this gross mess...
This film was something unexpected. I am a fan of almost all the actors in the film but I loved the chemistry between Hirsch and Simmons. I thought the film was well paced and well acted and It's one film i can watch again (as I have). The direction was great and I love the fact the a young man who is heartbroken is able to live through the past of his love even though broken but he finds himself and he gets to know his ex better than he knew her when they were dating. I loved the film, I thought it was awesome.
I must say I am very surprised to see all these negative reviews, and the low score for this movie. I watched it with relatively low expectations, and ended up LOVING IT ! I do NOT understand any of the criticism from the other negative reviewers, I think all actors did a hell of job! It was thrilling and funny from beginning to end, and even very touching. I do not want to spoil anything so I will not go into details, but trust me, I am sure that MANY of you will love this movie, it had me glued to the screen from the beginning, and I honestly did not want it to end. To me this is a hidden gem, WATCH IT !
I thought Hirsch did OK. Simmons - dare I utter it - not so much. What I believe his character was supposed to undergo would have been some kind of transformation, from up-tight, mysterious dark dude to a nice guy who learns to appreciate the alternative ways of living, a little less conservative, generational gap reloaded and all. This metamorphosis however, Simmons did not transmit in a credible enough fashion, in my opinion. Remember Bob de Niro in the "Meet the parents" Quadrology? That would have been the prize. Simmons just didn't nail it. The rest was OK, somewhat lacking the drive. Solid, a little boring.
This is one of worst comedy movies. In fact it is so bad, that I am confused as to what genre it should belong to. Go watch something else. Not even a single dialogue or situation in this movie made me even grin. Stay away from this crap. In fact I would suggest you to go watch Adam Sandler instead, at least he is funnier. I would only suggest it if you got nothing better to do than watch this.
I like both J.K. Simmons and Emile Hirsch but that wasn't enough to make it a good movie. J.K. Simmons shouldn't be in a comedy, he just has not the face for it. The script was not well written, a quite boring story. Two guys going from one point to another trying to find their daughter/ex-girlfriend. The comedy factor was almost nihil to me. I guess I don't have the same sense of humor as other reviewers that thought it was hilarious. There is the odd joke every now and then but certainly not any that you will remember in the future. The positive thing about the movie is that it is not too long, so at least you don't feel like you wasted a lot of time. But if I knew what I know now I would just watch something else.
So Emile Hirsch and JK Simmons ... now that is a pairing that sounds fun. And I do understand if some may have expected something different from this. But as it is, this is a low budget comedy, dare I say road movie(?), that has a couple of things for it. And that's not just the actors themselves but the set up. While it's simple, it's also very effective and it does draw quite a few talented actors in smaller roles to rub shoulders with our lead actors. None of us is without fault, so it's not easy seeing others people misery. But when done in a light and funny way (mostly) like in this movie right here, it is quite enjoyable to take that ride. Don't expect this to have Academy Award performances though. Still decent enough overall
Don't bother. Boring. Fake people. Could easily have been written and directed by Seth Rogen. Out-take note: At the end Hirsh is playing the banjo on stage but is fingering notes and chords outside of the capo which is further down the neck of his banjo.
