interesting
Saw this movie after hearing and reading it was historical and proclaimed the Gospel Message. We hoped that our children ages 13-17 would enjoy it. We were disappointed it had little history (mostly what every 4th grader on up already knows) but by far were surprised that a movie perpetrated to be Christian didn't proclaim the Gospel or to our recollection even have Jesus Christ's name in it. If you are looking for a clean action movie for boys aged 8-17 then it might be the movie for you. We found ourselves leaving the movie theater wishing we could have our evening and our money back.
Sort of like a comic book superhero version of How America Won Its Independence, "Beyond the Mask" features Andrew Cheney as a British assassin named William Reynolds who goes to the colonies to help wage war against the Empire, as a means of demonstrating to his true love (Kara Killmer) that, despite his checkered past, he's really just a decent guy under it all. While in the new world, he becomes a masked figure known as The Highwayman, who rides around at night securing victories for the fledgling rebels while hiding his identity behind a black mask. And, yes, it's every bit as dopey as it sounds. (William Reynolds was, apparently, an actual person but little in his biography matches anything that happens on screen). A monument to inanity, "Beyond the Mask" lacks even the polish and professionalism of a junior high school civics project. Its portrayal of the personalities and events of the time is laughable at best, with a plot to blow up Philadelphia using Benjamin Franklin's own idea for electricity against him serving as the climactic stupidity. Luckily, Mr. Reynolds, scoundrel that he is, is on hand to thwart the dastardly deed with his heroism and his purity of heart. And that, dear children, is how the Americans came to win their independence from England. In more gifted hands, "Beyond the Mask" might have been a fun, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kind of lark, a harmless little bit of absurd revisionism designed to make history entertaining for the masses. But, sad to say, everything about the movie - from the script to the directing to the acting - is so terrible that there's actually precious little fun to be had.
We went to this special screening on a last minute invite. No foreknowledge about the film whatsoever. If you were one of the few people to walk out of the oldie GROUND HOG DAY, when it was released, ecstatic about the message then the same story telling style is captured here in this excellent film. There is one way that is right and until you get there your way doesn't work out. The period placing of the American Revolution is a very inspired choice and now in my mid-60's I saw bits of all the right minded heroes that we were exposed to in the politically incorrect period post WWII in the new medium of TV. The world's problems were addressed at 7:30 Sunday night for us oldies and this movie is a mix of all of them.
Simply outstanding. I cannot believe why this movie got poor ratings. May be they did not cast top rated celebrity. But everybody on this film has just nailed it. Very nice story, good adventure, action, romance, suspense more over acting what is missing just named it.Seriously it doesn't deserve this poor rating. Viewer must be misguided if they see the rating. I think IMDb authority should do something about it. Anyway each and everybody in this movie get my huge applause. In addition, a massage for those viewers who is looking for adventure, fantasy, romance, action etc. This movie will give you a package of everything. I must say again this movie deserve at least 8 out of 10.
My daughter and I went to see this movie this afternoon in Atlanta, Ga and really enjoyed it!! We were really impressed by the storyline and how it all came together. And the action was amazing! It doesn't seem like an independent film. It is just as good as all the other movies out in theaters right now. Maybe even better than some of them. I sure hope it gets distributed nationwide to all the other theaters. And I agree with a lot of the other positive reviews. It is action packed with romance and mildly Christian based. And like others said, it is not forced on you, it flows naturally. The music, the costumes, the make-up, the accents, the action, the romance, the acting, the props, background acting are all done beautifully! I sure hope they are working on another film. If I understand correctly, this film was created by graduated home-schoolers whom I had the pleasure of meeting one of them at a convention in Pa. They did as good a job as any Hollywood production company. I am very very happy for them and look forward to the next one.
This film rivals anything Disney could make! My husband and I are very picky, and we were both impressed. I love a good romance, and he loves action. Beyond the Mask is my new favorite movie! The plot is riveting and the acting is superb. The special effects were amazing too. I love period movies, and "Beyond the Mask" captured the late 1700's perfectly. Expect to be impressed. This movie is not your typical Christian movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone regardless of their world view. "Beyond the Mask" is a work of art. The time has come for Christians to make great movies that beautifully express God's love.
A friend of mine invited me to see this at a local theater, and I went since I wasn't doing much. My expectations were modest when I went in, so I wasn't expecting much. The whole time I was watching, I was cringing at every point of the movie. Not because of its low production levels, but because of the story. First of all, the Costumes and Sets were very well done, along with the Visual Effects and Music. The characters were interesting to say the least, but some dragged down the story and its structure. The thing that messed it up was its story, about an Assassin trying to find redemption. It's whole story was muddled and filled with a lot of romantic story that made incredibly difficult to watch. Another thing is using this to brainwash people into thinking that murderers can be redeemed and not face trial for their crimes. Just because in the ending the person becomes a Christian, does not erase what he has done, and should still be hung for his crimes. Another problem is that the movie takes from a lot of other movies and is not original. Many of the action scenes were discount Assassin's Creed, and the whole mask thing was discount Superhero films in general. The dialogue is also very stomach cringing and terrible to listen to. Overall; Great visual effects, costumes, setting, and music. Terrible story, bad dialogue, and some pretty bad characters. I would not recommend it to anyone, not even to Christians.
It is easy to see why this production has received mixed reviews! It hearkens back to the time when movies were produced with heart, without guile, and produced to inspire! Such is "out of vogue" in a day and age where such "corniness" is trivially dismissed as juvenile and unpolished. This is exactly why I loved it! The action, the story, the CGI....came together for a truly entertaining experience! But who am I to critique such things; Truth be told I'd much rather watch local children perform an impromptu early U.S. Colonial play, than the VAST majority of what passes for "entertainment" from the pits of "HellyWeird". As we all watch those collective chickens - "Those who will not remember the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them" - Santayana... Come home to roost, We would do well to try and remember the Successes of the past. Those victories that made this nation last as long as it has. Another truly inspiring movie: The Count of Monte Cristo, starring Jim Caviezel, along with many others, was belittled by the vipers that run HellyWeird. The poison that gushes continually from those who are allowed control of our nation's corporate media, entertainment, and education systems, is an acrid, thorny, testament to our complacence; our nation's forgetfulness. ANY reminder of what and why She once was, blemishes and all, is heartily welcomed in my book. I sincerely hope the Burns Brothers keep at it! In any & all the ways that TRULY matter. And if your are among that intrepid sort who still value Truthful, even AMAZING, inspiration, Net Search: "Ancient High Performance Electric Motors that are still in Production". Good Journeys
This was well written and executed. The CGI was amazing, the costuming was spot on.The plot twists kept me glued to the screen.. Loved the drama between the two main characters. John Rhys-Davies was intense in his part. Loved the theme of redemption. So glad that quality movies are coming out by independent film makers. I just wish it were in more theaters. But this is true to the concept of great things come in small packages.Looking forward to future projects by this group. Hope it is well received by a wider audience. Bravo to all involved in this project. I will see again and purchase when it comes out on Amazon. Kudos.
