This is clearly a movie which the directors and writers didn't bother to achieve correct reconstruction, American using ENFIELDS instead of GARANDS or even M1903, the sniper is using a G43 (German) with a loose scope, the Germans use T34(russians) instead of Panzers or such. Well I'm not saying it couldn't have happen, but as it is a movie they at least should be wearing proper equipment. It's watchable but for someone with 5 minutes of knowledge in WW2 and they would grow somewhat tired of watching so many mistakes... The effects are also a bit cheap, tank round that explode like a tin can of petrol, semi-auto rifles that don't circle and bolt action that can shoot 2 or 3 rounds in a row without cycling the bolt. these are simple enough things to acquire but they didn't bother with such...
Surely one of the worst war movies ever made. Uses every cliche at its disposal, plus has one of the most contrived and unrealistic plots you'll ever see. Acting is equally woeful. Even the special effects are bad: e.g. they didn't even use computer graphics to generate WW2 tanks, they had to use non-WW2 tanks. Avoid at all costs.
This is a straight, good guys versus the bad film. You have brave soldiers ready to die following orders, soldiers that volunteer without hesitation and soldiers putting others before self. Very remarkable. Such a fresh and rewarding film where you are spared the usual evil plots, selfish conniving bastards, cowardly spoiled brats, and those sickening overuse of newly discovered CGI effects. It is fortunate that I am not familiar with the weapons in use at the time of the story or, like others, I may be distracted by the wrong choice made. Much the same way a physicist would be distracted when something is shown in complete conflict with physical laws. Just grab your snacks, sit back and watch it for the fun of it.
I like WW2 movies. It's not that I expected a lot from this one. Overall it let me down. I have enjoyed some of the main actors in other movies. The premise was solid. But the overall feel of the movie was it was trying too hard. This is a B movie at best. I watched the entire movie and was mildly entertained. Set your expectations low. It seems that any "new" war movie is either a blockbuster or a sub-par offering. My personal rating system is fairly simple. If I watch the movie in it's entirely it automatically gets a 5, because it did what it was supposed to do. It entertained me. Company of Heroes will go on my shelf and probably never be watched again. It must of been a straight to DVD release. http://thelemondreport.blogspot.ca/
What a load of hooey. First they're in the Ardennes. Then they're in Germany, at a secret weapons test center, no less. Then, in full uniform, they decide to hop a train to Stuttgart, in the heart of the Third Reich! Implausible, far-fetched, and inane. Of course the one girl is attractive, and taking a bath, with the door open, in a house full of soldiers. Will someone please call Kelly McGillis, and tell her the scene from 'Witness' has just been hi-jacked. Worst yet, except for the Thompsons and one .45, none of the weapons carried by Americans were American. What, no Garrands had made it to the Bulge? I want my seventy-five cents back . . .
If you enjoyed "Inglorious Basterds" and are nostalgic for the old fashioned unabashedly heroic War Movies like "Where Eagles Dare" then you'll enjoy this over the top WWII fantasy. There is a likable sharpshooter hero (like Enemy of the Gates), gutsy soldiers from most fighting powers and an attractive good Fraulein. The action moves from graphically violent Battle of the Bulge sniper and tank battles to covert spy action in the heart of Germany as a group of soldiers goes into the heart of secret Nazi weapons factory in Stuttgart. There are many comical parts in this movie because they are so over the top they are funny. There is a bit of all types of fighting you can get in WWII, planes tanks machine gun hand. The excessive blood splatter reminds one of the video game origins of the movie. The filming feels quite on location and the production is quite good and Big Screen authentic for a straight to video movie. Worth a watch. Bearing in mind the type of war movie it is, it's entertaining, sometimes graphically violent, comical and good fun.
