Directed and written by Marcus Harben, this British found footage movie is all about Jonty (Harry Jarvis), who had a very public freakout on the reality show Brats of Belgravia and hasn't really gotten himself all that together. He starts that return to popularity by moving into a home with Zauna (Loreece Harrison), Amber (Erin Austen) Pete (Daniel Cahill) and the ghost of Dawn (Jessica Webber), a 90s rave girl. Supposedly, they're all college students, a fact ignored by campus therapist Becky Dunbar (Nina Wadia) who really just wants to be an internet star as much as the rest of them. The thing is, Dawn is dangerous but she also brings tons of followers to each of them. So they keep her around, in spite of the fact that she could kill any or all of them. I really liked how this kept showing each person's channel and explained why the camera has to keep rolling - they need the money - as horrifying things happen all around them. While I haven't been swayed to the need for influencers or found footage movies by Followers, it's well made and there are several scenes that made me laugh, which is more than most of the progeny of the Blair Witch have ever done.
Right, well as I sat down to watch the 2021 horror comedy "Followers" from writer and director Marcus Harben, I can't say that I was harboring any expectations. Why? Well, a movie about a social media influencer doesn't exactly cause me to be ecstatic. But still, since I hadn't already seen "Followers" before, nor even actually heard about it, I opted to give writer and director Marcus Harben's movie a chance. And what a waste of time this movie was. Sure, I didn't expect anything from a movie about a social media influencer, but the storyline told in "Followers" was just absurdly ridiculous and pointless. Talk about a massive swing and a miss. Needless to say that I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list here. Nor can I claim to be able to point anyone out for putting on a great or memorable performance. Now , I am sure that the actors and actresses were skilled enough, but I assume that it was utter lack of a properly written or interesting storyline that restricted the performers in doing their craft. Visually then you're not in for a great spectacle of special effects if you opt to sit down and watch "Followers". This is definitely not a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on. Some of us suffered through this ordeal so you don't have to. My rating of "Followers" lands on a one out of ten stars.
I love found footage, and this one was not too bad. The 4 leads were interesting enough to keep your attention. I didn't like Zara at all though, I feel like minus her and the movie would have been much better. They should have got someone else to play her. Overall, good ghost story, original kinda. It felt like it was more for youtubers or younger ppl though. It was a bit strange they were in the school dorm and roommates' but lived in separate rooms? It was like they all started in one room and later on had their own separate rooms. It was like a game of where's waldo with a ghost, they didn't always stop each time a ghost was shoot. The one guy blaming the other guy for EVERYTHING that went wrong got old and frustrating real quick. I think the effects were good though and it was an ok B - movie.
Ho hum flick about a household of college students who are vlogging because one of them is an influencer. In the course of the frenetic kind of vlogging that influencers give and take it comes out that they are in a haunted house. Of course it all comes down to proving the ghost online in such a way that subscribers can be got. They discover a homeless man has been living in the place but, still, he is not behind the noises and music they've been hearing. They know because the sounds continue even after he is dead. So, time to prove the ghost. There is little to no sense or continuity of story.
