I love Andrea Riseborough and I love movies in this genre, but this such a total letdown I can't believe I fell for all the good critic reviews. Are there any good critics anymore? Do these people actually watch these movies or just write something to get paid? In a nutshell, the little 9 year old girl is gaslighting Andrea's character. Why? Who the hell knows?? Her actions made no sense at all considering she was the child of Andrea's husband and the next door neighbor, which she somehow found out about without the father knowing who she is either, so hey let's gaslight his wife next door into thinking she is the reincarnation of her dead daughter, for no apparent reason other than the script says so, and never mind that she is 9 years old and how the hell does a 9 year old child manage to pull this whole scheme off anyway.. I already saw the same ridiculously implausible plot, albeit in a more conventional and overall better horror film, in The Lodge, where again two children go to exceptional lengths to gaslight their stepmother. At least in that one, she got the last laugh. In this mess, Andrea what, dies? Lives? Who knows? Who cares?
From the onset this movie drags and bumbles around trying to find a direction to go. Tons of small clips interspersed throughout along with children singing or humming. This is supposed to give the movie tension and a feeling of foreboding. However, it just takes so long for anything interesting to happen, almost a full hour and the entire film is only 1 hour 20 minutes. So after dragging and back story they have to wrap it up quickly. Not really anything of a pay off ending for having to endure frequent flash scenes and basically a film stitched together like a quilt. I kept waiting for the interesting part, a big reveal or something to make all the waiting worth it, and there is none. This film falls into the artsy bin, where film makers attempt to conceal all their mistakes with the excuse, it's just art. Therefore not having to have an intriguing story, a decent plot or thoughtful dialogue. In summary, the director just throws everything together into a big pot on slow cook and hopes everyone will like it.
If you read the synopsis, you know what this is about. There is a twist here but i didn't like it, it came out of nowhere. Therefore, i didn't like the ending. Up until the twist, it's watchable but still slow & dragging. And for a 83 minutes movie, this doesn't look good. It is not a bad movie, the actors are good, and maybe some people will like the ending. If you are in the mood for a slow mystery/drama (With emphasis on "drama"), maybe you will like it more than me.
Great to see good films being made in Northern Ireland these days. Days of the troubles are gone. Superb acting and different kinda story. I enjoyed it. The ending is rushed, needed more room to unravel and breath.
A heartwarming story of broken hearts and fateful twists. Good acting and soothing visuals. Unique plot and an interesting conclusion. Great realistic performance by the cast.
Twist ending worth to score higher from my perspective. When the story end in a surprising way, make no matter how boring the beginning is makes me feel worth it. Of course it need to make sense.
Let's just say I have insomnia and it put me to sleep. Bad storyline. Bad acting. Bad music. Don't waste your time. Sadly, I couldn't give it a zero.
I don't understand the low ratings. This is one of the best slow psychological thrillers I've seen in a while. Great cinematography, grief, dysfunctional family dynamics, and good sounds.
A mother who lost her daughter starts believing that her daughter may have come back to life thru the little girl that lives next door with her parents. Throughout their exhange, the girl reminds the mother of things her and her daughter have done together when she was alive in certain places and the mother is becoming more convinced that her daughter has come back from the dead and now living thru her neighbors daughter. The process of the big reveal does drag a bit but the revelation off all things become very clear and in the end without any spoilers, the mother is left devastated and I'll leave it right there. A solid one time (only) watch. Slow but definitely meaningful.
Slow with the use of too many 'flashbacks'. Not sure if it was the soundtrack or the Northern Irish accents, but difficult to follow what was being said at times. Unexpected but improbable twist at the end.
