"Monumental" brings us the story of two brotherly friends, who just recently lost their mother and are now preparing a road trip to the monuments she used to talk about, each coping with his own personal problems and challenges. On the way they learn a lot about themselves, the other, and what's important in life. I especially enjoyed the moments when the movie was brave enough to be a bit alternative. It's a beautiful idea to travel the monuments and some scenes are clearly carrying a lot of love, beyond what most mainstream movies provide as usual motives. Unfortunately, sometimes the producers couldn't resist to add some Hollywood-like elements, like an unpredictable win at a crash race or a last minute finish to the son's birthday party. Most often they don't really disturbed me, but they stand in the movie's way to be even more. Nonetheless this is a beautiful movie, that more people should give a try and experience. It might have its small issues and it isn't perfect but it is a very honest and careful portrait, that'll leave you richer than it finds you.
My first impression of Monumental was that this is a phenomenal story. There is a lot the film has going for it. This was actually the film that made me a Gary Cairns fan because his performance in this film was so good that I noticed his true acting range. Luke Albright is another actor that is also someone to look out for. I love the fact that the road trip these guys took in this film was real. And you can see all the things they go through has some way, shape or form has made them a better person. The character story is phenomenal. My main gripe with the film is from a technical standpoint. The way some shots were edited didn't turn out all that great. Including some of the sound edit. But when you learn what they had to go through to get the shots with the constant hurdles they had to go through...to me it was obvious they did the best they could with they were able to pull off. I appreciate that Gary who also wrote the script, really focused on making a compelling character story and it shows. After watching this film, I saw great potential and if given te opportunity both Gary and Luke I believe can show what they're really capable of to a mainstream audience. I would definitely recommend checking out the film and don't let the technical flaws of the film deter you from finish watching it...because you would miss out on seeing what these guys are truly capable of pulling off...especially if given the budget, time and resources. Cheers.
This movie is one that takes you through genuine emotions. The questions raised by circumstances and actions. 2 friends trying to find themselves while honoring one's mother. The acting in this movie brings true emotion to life! Seeing these friends go through realistic tribulations; questioning themselves and decisions they and others have made and how it affects their lives is a true picture of life. Definitely a must see!
I really enjoyed this sensitive journey of two men trying to live life in the consciousness of others. Cairns gave a stirring performance as a father/son who goes over and beyond for the family. Over anxious, over wrought by the day to day living. He finds release on the road trip. Eventually to come home to himself. His heart. Albright's performance as one who is figuring it all out. Out of all the confusion. He brings things into focus and on the right path. At journey's end he finds himself reconciled with his hear. The cast is genuine and the plot is realistic of times we live in today. Nice work everyone. I find it entertaining. Yet, touching in teaching us life's main cord. Love. Yes, love knows no bounds in this movie.
Good movie!
