At 2hrs 29mins,the movie was definitely too long. The makers should have sliced off at least 30 minutes the film.At best everything about the movie was average.
The plot features a Kanpur cop who investigates the brutal murder of a politician from an upper-class but suspenseful family. The Genre is the same old, same old murder mystery. The cop develops an attraction towards the prime suspect, Radha (played by Radhika Apte) and her dusky-skinned 'outsider' status. Also this hero is surprised as he doesn't expect a fragile woman to execute a murder. Circumstances forces the cop's gaze to evolve. The focus is on how the cop's understanding of power and masculinity changes, matures to match the changing world outside.Slowly but steadily, we sense the broadening of Jatil's mental bandwidth. The way Jatil sees justice becomes inextricably linked to the way he sees women. He wants to fight a system, but for that he is actually fighting men like himself. Quite mind numbing actually Unless you are an hardcore Nawaz fan, you could skip it altogether,
Premise of the movie is good. Acting is mainly very good specially from Nawaz But, the writing and direction is where the film loses it. Being a murder mystery, it plays out less like a murder mystery but, more like a policeman who is just running around threatening people and having an affair with one of the suspects. There is no systematic approach to the investigation. Not once the crime scene is shown in full clarity. The investigator doesn't even search the house properly for any clues. He is just talking to people of the house and delivering great dialogues. How the investigator reaches his conclusion is also not very clear. Just looks like a bunch of scenes put together, and out of the blue he has it all figured out. Poorly written murder mystery
Good to see something worthwhile come from Netflix India after such a long while. Movie is a good thriller with decent pacing and realistic characters noting over the top. Performances are perhaps what saves this movie Nawazuddin, Radhika, Ila Arun,Tigmanshu & aditya Srivastava bring life to their characters.Shweta, Nishant & shivani should've had more screen time. Only drawback is script which I thought was somewhat patchy and could've been better written. Also Netflix needs to come out of its sacred games hangover and explore other ideas. TlDr: One time watch thriller with good performance & okaish script.
Twisty and compulsively watchable, even though it is convoluted in parts and way too long. But an excellent story and pitch perfect performances, particularly from Siddique and Apte, raises its bar.
Indian cinema has undergone transition recently. Recognition of character actors, experimenting directors and writers has brought a long awaited pleasant change. The movie is a great representation of all that. Positives: Solid casting, no big names yet powerful and suitable actors chosen. Nawazuddin, Radhika, Tigmanshu and many more are all one of the finest actors in India and they definitely deliver a punch. Story although a bit Poirotesque but still beautifully written. The slow build culminating into a big finale is crafted with precision. May be inspired by Agatha Christie's style where everyone is a suspect, but still the suspense is created and kept me guessing till the very end. The curtain raiser we had, I never saw it coming. The love story woven into a murder mystery may sound Bollywoodish but that doesn't derail the plot. Negatives: The songs had no place in the movie and seemed a bit out of place. They tried to do Gangs of Wasseypur here by even going with off beat and classical lyrics, but things did not click. Conclusion: Good thriller and a right step into right direction by Indian cinema. Time to recognise good actors and movie-plots rather than going for spicy formula and celebrity actors.
Indian answer to knives out .. and a brilliant one .
This movie looks like remake of hollywood movie 'knives out'... A police man investigate the murder it happens in a rich big family.. Then he faces political person problem and some guys dont listen to that police man. I feel little confuse about the characters and relationship between them.. But still worth watch for family audience..!!
Production quality of the movie doesn't lives upto the benchmark set by International Netflix Originals... Budgetary restraints could have been the cause of it.. but overall the movie is worth your time..
