It follows the story of Publisher's Summary From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity's creation and evolution - a number one international best seller - that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be "human". One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one - Homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us? Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago, with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas. Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because, over the last few decades, humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become? This provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential for aficionados of Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem. ©2015 Yuval Noah Harari (P)2017 HarperCollins Publishers. This is a History series and has received a rating of 9.4/10 from 49,943 viewers.

The book was very informing. But the book itself and the narrator made it very heavy. Hard to follow up without lying full attention.

I listen to alot of big histories on audible because they don't have much in the way of critical scholarship. The analysis in this one is only slightly better than Guns, Germs and Steel, but basically it's the same sort of thing: lots of history, archaeology and anthropology, but virtually devoid of critical analysis. The analysis really falls apart when you get to the chapter on capitalism and modernity. If you have a critical mind, you can pick through the myopia of the author's perspective and form your own analysis from the vast array of research that the book cites along the way.

Such an eloquent voice, but too much emphasis by intonations that some how human beings are responsible for the world being harsh. As if it was all mindful and self will. My perspective just might be, all wet. Likely being hypervigilant to how facts can be skillfully manipulated in the Group Think attitudes of judgement and opinion seen in modern press. I couldn't finish it. So disappointingly sad.

This truly is a great work of summarizing the human history, and in explaining our place in the world.

Great historical and societal information. Only grip is some of Yuval's conclusions seem too certain.

I would have liked to hear a brief history on humankind without constantly being told how horrible humans are.Although the facts may be correct, I don't need to hear over and over how Sapiens are a plague on the earth.I get it, we suck.

I read many reviews about the second part of the book criticizing the second half of it. Nonetheless the book provides an objective perspective of our economical, social and political evolution throughout history. Evidently there are plenty controversial things in our history we may not want to talk about. We as humans are full of contradictions; as our history has shown. Hope you enjoy it too!

Lots of room for deep, extended thought and discussion here. Enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it.

I found this book fascinating, if a bit dry at times. It shed new light on many things in daily life, and I find myself discussing it frequently. A good use of my time.

To understand the future you have to understand the past. This book is a quick primer. There are other sources that go more into depth, but this book is fantastic at takingthe entirety of human civilizational history and condensing it down into something very digestible. Can’t recommend this enough, especially for people hoping to pray or wish our problems away. The only way to understand why we have the problems we have is to understand how we got to where we are in the first place.
