"What you do is not magic, it is monkey *." Burt Wonderstone (Carell) is a young boy who is bullied and feels alone. One birthday he gets a magic kit and his life is changed. Meeting a new friend and honing his act leads him to be a headliner in Las Vegas for many years. After new hip street magician Steve Gray (Carrey) begins to take the spotlight from Burt he must change his act or fade away. Going in I thought how could a movie with this cast be bad. I'm not saying that it is a bad movie at all because it is very funny and entertaining but I was hoping for more. The roles for both Carell and Carrey were different then they usually play which is nice and the dialog is funny but there just seemed to be something missing. I'm not sure what it was that was missing but some of the movie felt a little flat. I do recommend this but more as a rental then anything. Overall, this is very funny but also missing something to make it what I was hoping for. I give it a B.
I wanted to like this movie. With a cast like this, you would think it would be hard not to like it. I didn't like it. I really don't see myself as a movie snob. But this. . . didn't get me interested at any point. I didn't understand this film - who is the target audience? Is it children? Cant be - there was too much of a focus on the womanising, objectification of women etc. Is it a slapstick a la pineapple express? Not enough goofball. Is it a warm and fuzzy? The characters are not particularly likable. Twists in the plot? None. What in the world made them want to make this movie? Olivia Wilde did well, she couldn't help how lame the film was. Complete waste of money. You would be better off staying at home and watching infomercials.
It had been a while since i watched a movie and after watching it, I had to ask myself, what did I just watch? what was the point? Having heard about this movie before and looking at the list of actors in it, I had high hopes for it, as each of them have been pretty good in different roles up to now. But somehow after watching this movie I ended up disliking all of them, In my view there is lots of talent in this movie but somehow it has been wasted, I did not find this movie funny at all, i did not feel any chemistry between the actors and somehow it felt as thou they do not really know how they should try to make the audience laugh. Of course the story of the movie is nothing new, but I was hoping an old tale is going to be told with lots of laughter and funny moments but unfortunately I was very wrong!
