Good movie!
A Lifetime movie involving a surrogate and a nanny invariably casts the most adorable, well-behaved infant imaginable. And despite any potential danger, the baby is always kept safe and sound. In the case of "The Surrogate Scandal," the infant Mathilda has a fragile mother who sleepwalks while carrying a large kitchen knife. She has an uncle who is a rageholic drug addict. She has a father who is a poisoner and a murderer. And she has an aunt who rivals the antics of Lady Macbeth. But no worries...the child is never in danger from start to finish! The most interesting character in the film was Amelia Andrews, the mother of the surrogate Beth, who died under suspicious circumstances after carrying and delivering little Mathilda for Alex and Grace Hardy, the superstars of an acclaimed food podcast. Amelia worms her way into the family by lying about her credentials, then becoming the nanny. But her intent is always sincere to discover the truth about her daughter and to do what is in the best interest of sweet, little Mathilda. The dialogue was crisp, the performances were first-rate, and the film moved along at a good clip. Although there was a false ending with the villain's melodramatic, public confession, the second and more complete climactic scene was full of new revelations about the strange health and food gurus, the Hardys. For the denouement, the filmmakers went the extra mile to discover a second adorable baby to play little Mathilda at one-year old in the epilogue. In that final scene, little Mathilda is still being handled with kid gloves, but now, she is also the star of the show!
