I love independent stuff because they can afford to be original and fresh; sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, and 'Volumes' didn't do it for me. I didn't find any of the stories interesting, funny, scary or original (in a good way). I value the efforts of new directors, but I cannot say a lot of positive stuff about this particular one. I am surprised that this movie got so much praise, but maybe it's just me!

Volumes of Blood is a horror film centered around the community of Owensboro, KY, or more directly, the library in Owensboro, KY. While this may seem insignificant from a review point of view, I assure you, it isn't. But more about that in a minute. This film had me tossing my hands in the air and giving up in frustration after just watching the first three minutes of it. Then I hit the 3:20 mark in the film, and caught my first glimpse of true indie film making genius! The writing in this film is good, the dialogue is pure genius, and the cinematography is nothing short of amazing. The story centers around a group of four friends inside the library who have to come up with urban legends off the top of their heads. Each story is unique in plot as well as feel. D.P. Bonnell is credited with the cinematography, and just from this film alone, I can not heap enough praise their way. Taking a singular location and making it feel different for each of four urban legend stories, as well as the original plot takes a lot of skill, talent, and hard work, and every bit of it shows here. The dialogue itself, while sometimes a little over the top, has it's own fair share of genius. The urban legends of the film may not make it into youthful circulation, but I assure you, some of the jokes and one liners surely will. Now, let's talk Owensboro for a second. It is clear from just watching the film that the community itself plays a major role in supporting the film as well as becoming part of it, and as a film maker, that is always refreshing to see. I feel like there is so much more to praise about this film, but it really can't be done without spoiling the movie itself, so I'm sorry for that, but rest assured, this film is 100% Indie Film Group approved! There are plenty of mediocre indie films in circulation out there, but Verite Cinema's Volumes of Blood is definitely not one of them. This is a great film for both film makers, as well as those who just enjoy a good horror film with a twist!

So if you want to see this one and after the second you are bored or you think about stopping, for the love of God, do not! because the last three are the best. The best one is the third then the five and the four. The third was the best acted, scripted and technically speaking outstanding. The next one, the fourth, is slightly inferior but enjoyable and the last worth a watch. The first two are not that good but as I said keep watching. The overall is not for a more than a five but neither for a less rating than that.

I understand this film is an indie movie- and I want to make sure people know I have nothing against that. With that out of the way- this movie is simply not good. The acting is terrible, the production value is bad, and the stories have no pay-off whatsoever. The 'twist' at the end makes no sense- and left me shaking my head - wondering what in the world I had just watched. Anthologies are hard to review because each story is basically a mini-film and each have their own merit- yet with this one- I can't find any. 2/10

Four college students sitting in a library relate their ideas to start an urban legend, The film consists of their four tales plus a film within a film for the final story. While the stories are different, the setting is always the library and there are subtle connections between the tales if you pay attention to details. In the beginning they show fake newspaper clippings by reporters like "Molly Hatchet." There are all kinds of little things to watch out for. Yes there was killing and blood. The stories were supposed to be an experiment in tales of fear, but as such they were light, as a Creep Show episode, just shorter and no dead Muppet to tell us a pun. Roni Jonah, Jason Crowe, and Jim O'Rear have appeared in a number of "B' films together. They lead a core of solid acting for the genre. One episode was done in black and white. P.J. Starks imitates John Goodman (The Big Lebowski) in one scene. Good anthology if you like "Creep Show" stuff. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
