I would preface this by adding that I am a very big fan of folk horror. Which generally tends to throw some off apparently, by reading some of what others have to say. That's fine, to each their own. Stick to what you know and like perhaps and you won't be racing to the review section to throw others off that might enjoy a dark, atmospheric, well written and acted film. Love them or hate them lets face it also, DCU and Marvel films, and might as well throw Woo films in the mix, are not well made cinema. They have literally dumbed down the younger viewers into the adage that anything else but is either a poorly made film or didn't understand it, and the reviews mostly on imdb lately reflect this. Use a post viewing synopsis, no shame in that--- to help tie things together. This is a film that uses great cinematography, a twisted story and time line with some pretty unique qualities that the runtime allows to breathe. The score is passively unsettling and generates a sense of dread (think the evil plucking strings that terrified in Kubricks The Shining) in the first act. If you like the work of Vitaletti (The Last Thing That Mary Saw) or Feigelfelds criminally underrated Hagazussa you'll find something along those lines in this film. No creaky houses and jump scares, but a winding tale of dark family secrets and lies. 8/10 ..

This is probably the best horror movie since HEREDITARY. It's difficult to categorize it though, because it is not purely horror. It's a horror/thriller/mystery and crime drama too. A multiple genre movie and the combination is successfful. It's divided in three parts. The first part is not as good as the second and the third. Second part is my favorite. At the final part, some questions are answered but still this looked like an "open to interpretation" movie. I don't like much ambiguous movies, however, i did a research in Reddit and i think that i realised what happened here. I suggest to watch this movie without reading any review, without knowing anything about the plot. It's very interesting, dark, bleak and well structured, like fine literature ( Maybe Joyce Carol Oates, Gillian Flynn, Cormac McCarthy influenced the writers). There are no cheap jump scares here, no serial killers with axes/chainsaws, no demons except the inner demons. This is not a movie for teenagers, some emotional maturity is required for appreciating it. Doom and gloom as it gets but still not overdramatic or excessive. Every actor here is amazing, but Nick Stahl is excellent, primus inter pares. It's not a flawless movie but the flaws are not worth mentioning, just some details.

Not suspenseful...not scary. Just simply disgusting reality we don't need in movies. Seriously... wtaf. And my review can't be less than 600 characters to be submitted?! Okay. When looking for suspense and scary and Halloween type shudder experiences, I personally would prefer her not to dig into the degradation of our society throughout mankind. It was sad, disgusting and lacking imagination at best. Is that enough for you? Nope. It says my review is still too short. How about... my trial with Shudder is disappointing at best. Pretty sure you could have dug up more suspenseful, interesting and imaginative creators, writers, playwrights and filmmakers. The end. Disappointed.

I turned this movie off about 25 minutes in. That was the time when the father was sexually assaulting his son. Prior to this scene, the father had been verbally abusing the son non-stop. I couldn't stomach any more of it. I thought this was a horror movie, I wasn't expecting that type of horror. I can't stand to see parents abuse their children like that. Now I feel sick to my stomach and need to watch something to get this out of my head. The acting was fine, the sound & scenes were all fine. I just can't stomach the plot of the movie. I didn't expect child sexual abuse or verbal abuse. I should have checked DDD before I tried to watch this.
