I was fortunate enough to catch this at Louisville Supercon with Andre, Ashley, & Ryan presenting. The whole scene was surreal. But even separated from the event itself; I fell in love with this documentary. It isn't a 'making of', though there are wonderful behind the scenes from the perspective of cast, crew, and peeks into the truly *epic* creature design. It isn't a 'biopic', though there is some heartful insight on the people within & behind 'The Monster Squad'. It isn't just a 'fan tribute', though I found out about other artists who love the Squad just as much as I do, entire collections of memorabilia, and limited run festivals that I *really* wish I had been a part of and will be keeping a closer eye on in the future. This, overall, is just a fun love-letter to folks who really love the 1987 film. And it's directed by 'Sean' himself.

This is a very uneven documentary. To be clear I'm a huge Monster Squad fan. I originally saw it when it was released in the 80's and like most 80's kids i grew up renting it on vhs quite a few times. I was overjoyed when the loaded with extra's dvd came out a decade ago. So I was decently hyped up when i heard about this documentary. I went and saw it at a Alamo Drafthouse with star Andre Gower and the director there to do a Q&A afterwards. So what went wrong? Well the behind the scenes details and interviews are good. We get to see the creature effects being made and hear from the designers. Some key people like Duncan Regehr (Dracula) are interviewed. Things like that will hold your attention but then way too much time is spent with MEGA nerdy obsessive fans many of whom cry their brains out talking about how this movie CHANGED THEIR LIVES. I love it too people but come on it's just a movie. I guess i recommend watching it once but i really don't think people in their 30's-40's will like it as much as crybaby millennial's. All in all it was what i expected. The director said his next project is about boy bands....sounds about right. It should have been 90 minutes of behind the scenes then get the fanboy/fangirl footage out of the way at the end. I'm glad Monster Squad has such a good following now but it needs a better/more serious documentary.
